India completes 4,809 km of high-speed corridors, 5,580 km under construction: Government

Synopsis

India has awarded 10,389 km of National High-Speed Corridors and Greenfield Expressways, of which 4,809 km have been completed while 5,580 km remain under construction, the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways informed Parliament. The government said project execution is being regularly monitored at the project, state and central levels to accelerate construction and address implementation bottlenecks. To expedite delivery, the Centre has introduced measures including digital land acquisition through the Bhoomi Rashi portal, faster environmental clearances via the revamped Parivesh portal and online approvals for railway overbridges and underbridges. Rajasthan has the highest completed corridor length at 1,192 km, while several states, including Bihar, Punjab and Andhra Pradesh, continue to witness significant construction activity.

The Government of India has completed 4,809 km of National High-Speed Corridors and Greenfield Expressways while another 5,580 km is currently under construction, taking the total awarded length across the country to 10,389 km, according to the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways. The figures were shared by Union Minister Nitin Gadkari in a written reply in the Rajya Sabha. 
The ministry said it has established a structured framework to regularly monitor the progress of all ongoing National Highway projects, including high-speed corridors and greenfield expressways. Reviews are conducted at the project, state and central government levels with the participation of state governments and other stakeholders to identify and resolve implementation challenges. 
To accelerate project execution, the government has introduced several technology-driven initiatives. These include streamlining land acquisition through the Bhoomi Rashi portal and GIS-based land acquisition plans, revamping the Parivesh portal to facilitate faster environmental and forest clearances, enabling online approval of General Arrangement Drawings (GADs) for railway overbridges and underbridges, and strengthening coordination with state governments to remove project bottlenecks. 
State-wise data released by the ministry shows that Rajasthan leads the country with 1,192 km of completed high-speed corridors, followed by Haryana (615 km), Gujarat (605 km), Uttar Pradesh (388 km) and Madhya Pradesh (372 km). Andhra Pradesh has completed 308 km, Karnataka 314 km, Odisha 240 km and Maharashtra 103 km. 
Several states continue to witness substantial construction activity. Punjab has the highest under-construction length at 774 km, followed by Bihar (589 km), Andhra Pradesh (585 km), Uttar Pradesh (496 km), Telangana (445 km) and Chhattisgarh (303 km). Other states with ongoing projects include Jharkhand, Karnataka, Tamil Nadu, Maharashtra, Odisha and West Bengal. 
The ministry said these corridors and expressways are being developed to improve connectivity, reduce travel time, strengthen freight movement and support regional economic growth. Greenfield expressways, in particular, are expected to provide access-controlled transport corridors capable of handling higher traffic volumes while improving logistics efficiency. 
According to the government, the combination of digital project management tools, faster statutory approvals and continuous monitoring is intended to ensure timely completion of highway infrastructure projects. The Centre said it will continue working with state governments and other agencies to expedite execution and strengthen India's expanding network of high-speed road corridors.
