The Tripura Pradesh Congress Committee has announced a two-hour blockade of the Agartala-Kamalpur National Highway to protest the deteriorating condition of the road and the difficulties faced by commuters. The protest will be held at four locations along NH-108B, which connects West Tripura, Khowai and Dhalai districts. The party has alleged poor quality in the highway upgradation work, while the state government has already approached the Union Ministry of Road Transport and Highways seeking repairs. The issue has gained attention following heavy rainfall that has further damaged the highway.
The Tripura Pradesh Congress Committee has announced that it will hold a two-hour blockade of the Agartala-Kamalpur National Highway at four locations to protest against the poor condition of the road and the inconvenience being faced by commuters. The protest is scheduled to take place from noon to 2 pm on July 23, covering stretches of NH-108B that connect West Tripura, Khowai and Dhalai districts.
Senior Congress MLA Sudip Roy Barman said the Agartala-Kamalpur highway via Khowai has become unsafe for commuters after heavy rainfall severely damaged the road, disrupting traffic movement. He said the state Congress decided to organise the blockade to highlight public hardships caused by the deteriorating condition of the highway.
According to Roy Barman, there were demands from party workers to extend the duration of the protest. However, the Congress decided to limit the blockade to two hours, considering that people from Khowai, Kamalpur and surrounding areas continue to depend on the highway for their daily travel and a longer disruption would further inconvenience commuters.
The Congress leader also alleged that the agencies responsible for upgrading the highway had compromised on the quality of construction, resulting in its present condition. The party has maintained that the damaged road has become a serious safety concern for motorists and requires immediate attention.
The state government has already written to Union Road Transport and Highways Minister Nitin Gadkari, requesting immediate repair of the national highway. NH-108B serves as an important road link connecting several districts in Tripura, and its condition directly affects passenger movement, transport of goods and access to essential services across the region.
Poor road conditions have remained a recurring concern in Tripura during the monsoon, particularly on highways passing through hilly areas where heavy rainfall often leads to rapid deterioration of road surfaces and traffic disruptions. The latest protest reflects growing public concern over the pace of maintenance and restoration works on key transport corridors in the state.
