Brookfield Asset Management has agreed to acquire battery storage company Aypa Power from funds managed by Blackstone in a deal valued at an equity value of USD 3 billion. The transaction marks another step in Brookfield's strategy to strengthen its renewable energy portfolio across North America amid rising demand for clean energy. Aypa Power is one of the region's largest battery energy storage system providers, with 6.5 gigawatts of operating, under-construction and contracted capacity, along with a development pipeline exceeding 20 gigawatts.
Brookfield Asset Management has agreed to acquire battery storage company Aypa Power from funds managed by Blackstone in a transaction with an equity value of USD 3 billion. The acquisition is part of Brookfield's plan to expand its renewable energy portfolio across North America as demand for cleaner and more reliable power continues to increase.
The deal values Aypa Power at an enterprise value of around USD 7 billion. The company is among the largest battery energy storage system providers in North America, with 6.5 gigawatts of operating, under-construction and contracted battery storage capacity.
The acquisition comes at a time when electricity demand is rising, particularly from data centres that require large amounts of power to support artificial intelligence and other digital technologies. Battery energy storage systems are increasingly being deployed to improve grid reliability, store excess renewable energy and balance electricity supply during periods of peak demand.
Blackstone had acquired Aypa Power in 2020 after identifying battery storage as a key segment that would play an important role in meeting future electricity demand driven by artificial intelligence, data centres and the broader energy transition. Since then, the company has expanded its project portfolio significantly.
Apart from its existing operational and committed assets, Aypa Power has a development pipeline of more than 20 gigawatts of battery storage projects, providing Brookfield with a substantial platform for future growth in the North American energy storage market.
The transaction also reflects continued investor interest in energy storage infrastructure, which has become an important part of renewable energy development. As the share of wind and solar power increases across electricity networks, battery storage projects are expected to play a larger role in maintaining grid stability and supporting the transition to cleaner energy sources.
