Air India will resume non-stop flights between Delhi and Toronto from August 1 by deploying its new Boeing 787-9 Dreamliner aircraft on the route. The airline will also increase flight frequency from five weekly services to a daily schedule. The move comes more than a year after the closure of Pakistan's airspace forced Air India to operate longer routes with a fuel stop in Vienna. The new aircraft will reduce travel time by nearly three hours and offer upgraded cabin products across business, premium economy and economy classes as part of the airline's fleet modernisation.
Air India will begin operating non-stop flights between Delhi and Toronto from August 1, deploying its new Boeing 787-9 Dreamliner aircraft on the route. The airline will also increase services to a daily schedule from the existing five weekly flights.
The restoration of direct operations comes more than a year after the closure of Pakistan's airspace in early 2025 forced Air India to reroute several flights to North America and Europe, resulting in longer flying times and technical fuel stops. As a result, Delhi-Toronto flights were being operated using the airline's legacy Boeing 777 aircraft with a refuelling halt in Vienna, Austria.
According to Air India, the introduction of the longer-range Boeing 787-9 will eliminate the need for the fuel stop, subject to available airspace. This is expected to reduce the total travel time from Delhi to Toronto by nearly three hours, bringing it down from around 20 hours, including the refuelling halt, to about 17 hours. The return service from Toronto to Delhi will continue to operate as a non-stop flight with a journey time of up to 16 hours.
The Boeing 787-9 Dreamliner deployed on the route is configured with 30 private business class suites, 28 premium economy seats and 238 economy class seats. The aircraft forms part of Air India's ongoing fleet upgrade programme aimed at improving passenger experience on international routes.
The airline also said it will restore daily services between Delhi and Toronto after temporarily reducing the frequency during June and July this year. The reduction was made due to unprecedented fuel price increases and broader geopolitical developments that affected flight operations.
Air India Chief Executive Officer and Managing Director Campbell Wilson said the airline is gradually expanding the deployment of its newest aircraft and upgraded cabin products across major international destinations. He added that introducing the Boeing 787-9 on the Delhi-Toronto route marks another step in strengthening premium travel offerings between India and Canada while expanding the airline's latest onboard products across its North American network.
Air India, part of the Tata Group, has been undertaking a large-scale transformation programme since its acquisition in 2022. The airline has placed record aircraft orders, introduced new cabin interiors, and is progressively deploying next-generation aircraft across domestic and international routes. It currently operates a fleet of nearly 190 aircraft and continues to expand its long-haul network while modernising existing services.
