Air India has announced that it will shift its operations at New York's John F. Kennedy International Airport from Terminal 4 to the newly developed Terminal 6 in 2028. The move is part of the airline's efforts to enhance the travel experience for passengers on its India-US routes. Along with relocating its operations, Air India will open its signature Maharaja Lounge at the new terminal. Until the transition takes place, the airline will continue operating its Delhi and Mumbai flights from Terminal 4 using Airbus A350 and Boeing 777 aircraft.
Air India has announced that it has selected the newly developed Terminal 6 (T6) at New York's John F. Kennedy (JFK) International Airport for its operations, with the shift scheduled to take place in 2028.
The airline currently operates all its JFK services from Terminal 4 (T4), where it offers direct flights to Delhi and Mumbai using Airbus A350 and Boeing 777 aircraft. These operations will continue from Terminal 4 until the planned relocation to Terminal 6 in 2028.
According to the airline, Terminal 6 is being developed in two phases. The first phase, which includes the opening of an initial set of gates, is scheduled to become operational in 2026. The remaining gates and the full terminal are expected to be completed by 2028, when Air India plans to move its operations.
As part of the transition, Air India will also establish its Maharaja Lounge at Terminal 6. The dedicated lounge is expected to offer premium facilities for eligible passengers travelling through the airport.
The move comes as Air India continues to strengthen its international network and improve the passenger experience following its ongoing transformation programme under the Tata Group. In recent years, the airline has expanded its long-haul operations, inducted new Airbus A350 aircraft into its fleet, upgraded cabin products, and invested in airport lounges and customer service improvements across key international destinations.
Terminal 6 is one of the major infrastructure projects under the broader redevelopment of John F. Kennedy International Airport. The terminal is being designed to provide modern passenger facilities, improved connectivity, and a better travel experience, with several international airlines expected to operate from the new facility once it becomes fully operational.
