MMRDA completes key construction milestone on Elevated Eastern Freeway Extension

Synopsis

The Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA) has completed a key construction milestone on the 13.9-km Elevated Eastern Freeway Extension (EFE) by successfully installing two 59-metre-long main trusses of a segment launcher over the Eastern Express Highway. The operation, completed within a four-hour traffic block, marks the beginning of the superstructure construction phase. The six-lane elevated corridor will connect Anand Nagar in Thane with Chheda Nagar in Ghatkopar and is expected to reduce travel time between South Mumbai and Thane to around 20–25 minutes after completion.

The Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA) has completed a major construction milestone for the 13.9-km Elevated Eastern Freeway Extension (EFE) with the successful installation of two main trusses of a segment launcher on the Eastern Express Highway. 
Each truss measures 59 metres in length and weighs around 160 tonnes. According to MMRDA, the entire operation was completed within a four-hour traffic block, while the actual installation of both trusses took just one hour. The authority said the work was carried out through detailed planning, strict safety measures and close coordination with the Mumbai Traffic Police to minimise disruption on one of the city's busiest road corridors. 
With the installation of the main trusses complete, the segment launcher will now begin the next stage of construction by placing 1,632 precast concrete segments. Each segment weighs around 90 metric tonnes and will be erected span by span to build the 25-metre-wide single-cell segmental superstructure of the elevated viaduct. This construction method is expected to speed up the superstructure work while reducing the impact on traffic below. 
The Elevated Eastern Freeway Extension is being developed as a fully elevated six-lane high-speed corridor connecting Anand Nagar in Thane to Chheda Nagar in Ghatkopar. The project aims to provide an alternative high-speed route and reduce congestion on the Eastern Express Highway, which carries heavy daily traffic between Mumbai and Thane. 
The corridor forms part of MMRDA's broader plan to strengthen east-west and north-south connectivity across the Mumbai Metropolitan Region through grade-separated transport infrastructure. Once operational, the Elevated Eastern Freeway Extension is expected to improve travel efficiency for commuters and commercial vehicles while reducing pressure on the existing road network. 
According to MMRDA, the project is expected to cut travel time between South Mumbai and Thane to around 20–25 minutes after completion, offering a faster and more reliable connection between the two locations.
