Tata Power secures SECI award for 324 MW pumped hydro storage capacity in Maharashtra

Synopsis

Tata Power has received a Letter of Award (LoA) from the Solar Energy Corporation of India Ltd (SECI) to supply 324 MW of electricity from its proposed 1,000 MW Bhivpuri Pumped Hydro Storage Project in Maharashtra. Awarded through a tariff-based competitive bidding process, the project will operate under a 40-year Pumped Storage Purchase agreement and is scheduled for commissioning by 2029. Developed under the Build, Own, Operate model, the facility will provide eight hours of energy storage to support peak power demand. The award strengthens Tata Power's long-duration energy storage portfolio, which forms part of its broader clean energy expansion and Net Zero 2045 strategy.

Tata Power has secured a Letter of Award (LoA) from the Solar Energy Corporation of India Ltd (SECI) for the supply of 324 MW of electricity from its proposed 1,000 MW Bhivpuri Pumped Hydro Storage Project in Maharashtra. The award was announced on Monday and forms part of SECI's competitive procurement programme aimed at strengthening India's long-duration energy storage capacity. 
The project was awarded under SECI's tariff-based global competitive bidding process for procuring 1,500 MW, equivalent to 12,000 MWh, of electricity from pumped hydro storage projects being developed across the country. Tata Power secured the contract through an electronic reverse auction. 
Under the agreement, the company will enter into a 40-year Pumped Storage Purchase (PSP) arrangement with SECI. The project is scheduled to be commissioned by 2029. 
The Bhivpuri project will be developed under the Build, Own, Operate (BOO) model and is designed to provide eight hours of energy storage. The storage facility will enable electricity generated during periods of surplus renewable energy production to be stored and supplied during periods of peak demand, supporting grid stability and improving the utilisation of renewable energy. 
According to the company, the project will be connected to the 765/400 kV South Kalamb Central Transmission Utility (CTU) Substation through the Inter-State Transmission System (ISTS), enabling integration with the national power transmission network. 
Tata Power stated that the award further strengthens its position in the long-duration energy storage segment, which is becoming increasingly important as India expands its renewable energy capacity. Pumped hydro storage projects are expected to play a key role in balancing intermittent solar and wind generation by converting surplus daytime electricity into dispatchable power that can be supplied when demand is highest. 
The company said the project aligns with its broader clean energy strategy and supports its target of achieving Net Zero emissions by 2045. 
Following the latest award, Tata Power's clean and green energy portfolio has reached 17.5 GW, including projects under development. The portfolio includes a development pipeline of 9.6 GW, of which 2.8 GW comprises pumped hydro storage projects. 
A part of the Tata Group, Tata Power operates as a vertically integrated power utility with businesses spanning generation, transmission, distribution and renewable energy. The company stated that its total operational and under-development power generation capacity now exceeds 26 GW, comprising around 17.5 GW of clean and green energy capacity, including projects under construction, and approximately 8.9 GW of thermal generation capacity, providing a diversified energy mix.
