Bihar Chief Minister Shri Samrat Choudhary has inaugurated the Belwa–Minapur Link Channel under the Bagmati–Burhi Gandak River Link Project in Sheohar district, developed at a cost of INR 130.88 crore. The project aims to improve flood management and expand irrigation in North Bihar. During his visit, the Chief Minister also inaugurated and laid the foundation stone for around 40 development projects worth nearly INR 200 crore across the district. The river-link infrastructure is designed to divert surplus floodwaters from the Bagmati River to the Burhi Gandak basin, reducing flood risks while improving water availability for agriculture. The projects form part of the Bihar government's efforts to strengthen irrigation infrastructure, flood resilience and rural development in flood-prone regions of the state.
Bihar Chief Minister Shri Samrat Choudhary on Sunday inaugurated the Belwa–Minapur Link Channel in Sheohar district, marking the commissioning of a major component of the Bagmati–Burhi Gandak River Link Project. Constructed at a cost of INR 130.88 crore, the project is intended to improve flood management while expanding irrigation facilities in North Bihar. During the same visit, the Chief Minister also inaugurated and laid the foundation stones for around 40 development projects with a combined investment of nearly INR 200 crore.
The Belwa–Minapur Link Channel has been developed by rejuvenating and remodelling the approximately 68.8-km Belwa Dhar channel, extending from Belwa Ghat in Piprahi block of Sheohar district to Minapur in Muzaffarpur district. The infrastructure has been designed to transfer excess water from the flood-prone Bagmati River into the Burhi Gandak river system during periods of high discharge, helping regulate floodwaters while improving the utilisation of available water resources.
According to the state government, the project is expected to reduce flooding in vulnerable areas and improve irrigation across agricultural regions that frequently experience both floods and seasonal water shortages. By facilitating controlled inter-basin water transfer, the channel is intended to enhance water availability for farming and strengthen agricultural productivity across several parts of North Bihar.
Following the inauguration, Shri Samrat Choudhary inspected the newly completed channel and reviewed its alignment and operational features with officials from the Water Resources Department. He stated that integrated river management projects such as the Bagmati–Burhi Gandak River Link Scheme are aimed at addressing recurring flood-related challenges while creating long-term irrigation benefits for farmers.
Alongside the river-link project, the Chief Minister inaugurated and laid the foundation stones for nearly INR 200 crore worth of development works covering multiple sectors in Sheohar district. The projects include infrastructure and public utility works intended to improve civic amenities, strengthen rural infrastructure and support economic development across the district.
The Belwa–Minapur Link Channel is the first completed river-linking project in Bihar and forms part of the state's broader strategy to improve water resource management through integrated basin planning. By combining flood mitigation with irrigation development, the project is expected to support more efficient utilisation of river water while enhancing resilience in one of the state's most flood-prone regions.
