The Chhattisgarh government has directed a comprehensive safety audit of multi-storey residential buildings, commercial establishments, educational institutions, hotels and other public buildings across the state following recent fire incidents in different parts of the country. Chief Minister Vishnu Deo Sai has instructed authorities to carry out detailed inspections covering fire safety systems, structural stability, emergency preparedness and compliance with prescribed norms. The statewide exercise will be coordinated by district administrations and municipal authorities, with officials directed to rectify identified deficiencies and initiate action against establishments found violating safety regulations. The move follows concerns over recent fatal fire accidents, including the blaze in Lucknow that claimed 15 lives.
The Chhattisgarh government has ordered a comprehensive safety audit of multi-storey residential buildings, commercial establishments, educational institutions, hotels and other public buildings across the state following a series of recent fire incidents nationwide. Chief Minister Vishnu Deo Sai issued the directive in the past week, instructing authorities to undertake detailed inspections to ensure compliance with prescribed safety standards and minimise the risk of similar incidents.
According to an official statement, the decision follows recent fire tragedies in different parts of the country, including the blaze in Lucknow's Aliganj area on June 22 that claimed 15 lives. The building housed an animation centre among other establishments, and most of those who died were students.
The chief minister stated that ensuring the safety of citizens, students and the general public remained the government's foremost priority. He directed officials to enforce strict adherence to safety norms across public and private establishments to prevent similar incidents.
Following the chief minister's instructions, Chief Secretary Vikas Sheel directed all divisional commissioners, district collectors, municipal corporation commissioners, chief municipal officers, fire services officials and other concerned departments to launch a statewide inspection drive.
The safety audit will cover multi-storey residential buildings, coaching centres, tuition classes, hotels, lodges, shopping malls, commercial complexes and other public buildings. Authorities have been tasked with carrying out detailed inspections to verify whether these properties comply with applicable fire and building safety requirements.
During the inspections, officials will assess the availability and operational condition of firefighting equipment, the validity of fire safety no-objection certificates (NOCs), emergency exit arrangements, structural stability of buildings, electrical wiring and equipment, CCTV surveillance systems, first-aid facilities, and drinking water and sanitation infrastructure.
The inspection teams will also verify whether the number of occupants in a building is consistent with its approved capacity. In addition, they will examine parking arrangements and evaluate preparedness for evacuation, rescue operations and disaster management during emergencies.
The chief minister instructed authorities to issue directions for immediate rectification wherever deficiencies are identified during inspections. He also directed departments to initiate action in accordance with applicable rules against institutions and establishments found to have committed serious violations of prescribed safety standards.
Reiterating the government's focus on public welfare, Sai stated that ensuring the safety of students, women, senior citizens and other residents was the responsibility of the state administration. He directed all institutions and establishments to strictly comply with notified safety norms as the statewide audit and enforcement exercise progresses.
