The Centre has approved the construction of more than 6.18 lakh rural houses in Uttar Pradesh under the new phase of the Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana-Gramin (PMAY-G) for 2024-29, while also extending the minimum support price (MSP) procurement period for wheat, gram and lentils until July 8. The decisions were announced during a review meeting between Union Agriculture and Rural Development Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan and Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath in Lucknow. Alongside housing approvals, the Centre outlined measures to strengthen agricultural planning, water management and crop diversification, while reaffirming financial and technical support for timely implementation of the rural housing programme.
The Centre has approved the construction of more than 6.18 lakh houses under the Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana-Gramin (PMAY-G) for Uttar Pradesh and extended the minimum support price (MSP) procurement period for wheat, gram and lentils until July 8. The decisions were announced in the past week during a review meeting between Union Agriculture and Rural Development Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan and Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath at Yojana Bhawan in Lucknow.
According to an official statement, Chouhan handed over approval letters extending the MSP procurement period for the 2026-27 rabi marketing season and sanctioning rural housing units under the new phase of PMAY-G. The procurement window has been extended from June 24 to July 8 to ensure that farmers are not deprived of selling their produce at the notified MSP because of adverse weather conditions, delays in weighing or congestion at agricultural mandis.
The Union minister said Uttar Pradesh contributes nearly 38% of the country's wheat production and plays a significant role in ensuring national food security while supporting farmers' incomes. He added that the Centre and the state government are jointly preparing a scientific and long-term agricultural roadmap for the state covering crop planning, irrigation, water conservation, seeds, technology and agricultural marketing.
Referring to concerns arising from El Niño conditions, below-normal rainfall and declining groundwater levels, Chouhan said district-specific contingency plans would be prepared to encourage short-duration and low water-consuming crops. He added that alternative cropping options would be identified based on local soil conditions, water availability and existing cultivation patterns.
On the rural housing programme, the minister announced that 618,482 houses have been approved for Uttar Pradesh under the new phase of PMAY-G covering the period from 2024-25 to 2028-29. The approvals form part of the Centre's nationwide target of constructing two crore additional pucca houses under the scheme.
The statement further noted that surveys of rural households across Uttar Pradesh have been completed and eligible beneficiaries residing in kutcha houses have been identified. Chouhan assured the state government of full financial and technical support from the Centre to facilitate implementation of the programme.
He also stressed the importance of completing construction within stipulated timelines while maintaining quality standards and transparency during execution. The minister said coordinated efforts between the Centre and the state would be essential to ensure eligible rural households receive permanent housing under the scheme.
Deputy Chief Minister and Rural Development Minister Keshav Prasad Maurya, Agriculture Minister Surya Pratap Shahi, along with senior officials from the Centre and the Uttar Pradesh government, were present during the review meeting, the statement added.
