Synopsis

The Navi Mumbai Municipal Corporation (NMMC) has intensified its monsoon preparedness measures following heavy rainfall across the city, with emergency response teams and control rooms operating round the clock. Between the morning of June 23 and the morning of June 24, the civic body recorded an average rainfall of 125.23 mm, with Belapur receiving the highest precipitation of 139.40 mm and Digha the lowest at 114.40 mm. Cumulative rainfall for the current monsoon season has reached 148.15 mm. The civic administration has deployed water pumping systems in low-lying areas, activated disaster management and fire response teams, and instructed field staff to ensure uninterrupted stormwater drainage and remove fallen tree branches. Residents have also been advised to use dedicated emergency helplines and avoid acting on unverified information.

The Navi Mumbai Municipal Corporation (NMMC) has strengthened its emergency preparedness and monsoon response mechanisms following heavy rainfall across the city over the past few days. According to a civic update issued on June 24, the municipal administration has activated round-the-clock monitoring and field operations to minimise disruption and provide immediate assistance in areas affected by waterlogging and other rain-related incidents.
The civic body reported that widespread rainfall began on the night of June 22 and intensified across Navi Mumbai. Between 8.30 am on June 23 and 8.30 am on June 24, the city recorded an average rainfall of 125.23 mm. Among the eight municipal divisions, Belapur received the highest rainfall at 139.40 mm, while Digha recorded the lowest at 114.40 mm. Total rainfall received across the municipal limits since the beginning of the current monsoon season has reached 148.15 mm.
Municipal Commissioner Dr Kailas Shinde has been regularly reviewing the prevailing weather conditions and the city's preparedness for monsoon-related emergencies. The corporation stated that its Central Disaster Control Room at the civic headquarters has been functioning on a 24x7 basis, with dedicated personnel and emergency equipment deployed to coordinate response activities. Similar control rooms have also been activated across all eight ward offices, while emergency response teams at the corporation's five fire stations remain on standby to attend to incidents requiring immediate intervention.
Considering that several parts of Navi Mumbai are situated below sea level and are susceptible to temporary waterlogging during periods of intense rainfall, the civic body has kept dewatering pumps operational in identified low-lying locations. Field teams from ward offices have also been deployed to monitor roads and stormwater drainage systems throughout their respective jurisdictions.
According to the municipal administration, these teams are inspecting roadside drains and stormwater inlets to identify blockages that could impede the flow of rainwater. Where obstructions are detected, workers are clearing water entry points to facilitate drainage and prevent prolonged water accumulation on roads. The corporation also stated that teams are responding to instances where strong winds have caused tree branches to fall onto roads, removing debris promptly to restore normal traffic movement.
To facilitate communication during the monsoon season, the municipal corporation has issued emergency contact numbers for its Central Disaster Control Room, all eight ward offices and each of its five fire stations. Residents have been advised to contact the nearest ward-level control room or the central control room in the event of flooding, fallen trees or other rain-related emergencies requiring civic assistance.
The civic body has also appealed to residents to remain vigilant during periods of heavy rainfall, make use of the designated emergency helplines whenever necessary, and refrain from believing or circulating unverified rumours related to weather conditions or emergency situations.
