The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) has removed illegal commercial structures and footpath encroachments in Andheri West as part of its ongoing anti-encroachment campaign. The K West Ward demolished nine unauthorised shops, including structures on Veera Desai Road and Fun Republic Road, and removed additional sheds and staircases occupying public footpaths. Supported by local police and multiple civic departments, the drive aimed to restore pedestrian access and reclaim public spaces. The action forms part of wider enforcement efforts being undertaken across Mumbai.
The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) carried out an anti-encroachment drive in Andheri West earlier this month, demolishing illegal commercial structures and clearing footpath encroachments that civic officials said were obstructing pedestrian movement. The operation was undertaken by the K West Ward as part of the civic body's ongoing efforts to keep public spaces free from unauthorised occupation and improve accessibility across the suburb.
According to civic officials, nine unauthorised shops occupying public footpaths were removed during the exercise. One illegal shop located on Fun Republic Road was demolished, while another unauthorised establishment in the area was subjected to seizure action. A larger operation was conducted on Veera Desai Road, where eight unauthorised shops occupying public space were razed by municipal teams.
The drive also targeted additional structures that had been erected on footpaths without permission. Officials stated that illegally constructed sheds and staircases were removed as they had narrowed walking space and created obstacles for pedestrians. Following the demolition activity, the affected stretches were cleared to restore public access and improve ease of movement for residents and commuters using the area.
The operation was conducted under the supervision of senior civic officials, including Deputy Municipal Commissioner Dr Bhagyashree Kapase, and was led by K West Ward Assistant Commissioner Chakrapani Alle. Personnel from the ward's maintenance, building and factory, licensing, and public health departments participated in the exercise. Specialised municipal equipment was deployed to carry out the demolition and clearance work.
Police personnel from Amboli Police Station were present during the drive to provide security and ensure the operation proceeded without disruption. Civic authorities said coordination between municipal departments and law enforcement agencies was necessary to facilitate the removal of unauthorised structures from heavily used public areas.
The Andheri operation comes amid a broader anti-encroachment campaign being undertaken across Mumbai. In recent months, the BMC has conducted multiple demolition drives targeting unauthorised residential, commercial and roadside structures that occupy public land, obstruct infrastructure projects or restrict pedestrian access. Municipal officials indicated that similar enforcement actions would continue across the city as part of ongoing efforts to protect public spaces and maintain civic infrastructure.
