Bihar's rural works department (RWD) has said that more than 3,032 km of rural roads across seven flood-prone districts in north Bihar have been strengthened and surface-renewed ahead of the monsoon. The claim follows flooding in the Mechi river that affected Thakurganj block in Kishanganj district last week, triggered by heavy rainfall in Nepal, which also marginally raised water levels in the Kosi and Gandak rivers. The upgraded districts include Madhubani, West Champaran, East Champaran, Supaul, Purnia, Araria and Kishanganj, all located in Bihar's border and Seemanchal regions.
Bihar's rural works department (RWD) said on Monday that more than 3,032 km of rural roads across seven flood-prone districts in north Bihar have been strengthened and are in good condition, as concerns grow over possible flooding ahead of the monsoon. The statement followed heavy rainfall in parts of Nepal last week, which triggered flooding in the Mechi river and affected areas of Thakurganj block in Kishanganj district.
According to the water resources department's flood bulletin, the rainfall in Nepal also led to a marginal rise in water levels in the Kosi and Gandak rivers.
The RWD said the strengthening work had been carried out across Madhubani, West Champaran, East Champaran, Supaul, Purnia, Araria and Kishanganj districts, covering a combined 3,032 km. The department said it had been working extensively to improve the condition of rural roads and strengthen connectivity in districts bordering Nepal, as well as other border areas close to West Bengal in the eastern Seemanchal region. Surface renewal work on these stretches has also been completed, the department added.
Breaking down the figures, the RWD said 798 km of roads had been strengthened in Madhubani, followed by 627 km in East Champaran and 306 km in West Champaran. In Supaul, 271 km of roads were upgraded. Within the Seemanchal region, 386 km of roads were strengthened in Purnia, 340 km in Araria and 314 km in Kishanganj.
The IMD has forecast below-normal rainfall over north Bihar for June and July, normal rainfall in August, and below-normal rainfall in September.
