Indian engineering and infrastructure companies are exploring business opportunities in South Africa as the country moves ahead with plans to modernise its rail and logistics network. During the Africa Rail Expo, Indian firms held discussions with local stakeholders and signed new partnership agreements, reflecting growing commercial ties between the two countries. Indian officials highlighted the country's experience in rail infrastructure, ports and power systems, while companies showcased technologies ranging from rail construction and welding equipment to insulation materials, with some even considering local manufacturing in South Africa.
South Africa's ongoing efforts to modernise its rail and logistics infrastructure have opened fresh opportunities for Indian engineering and infrastructure companies, with several firms expressing confidence about expanding their presence in the country through partnerships and future projects.
The two-day Africa Rail Expo, which concluded recently in Johannesburg, brought together Indian and South African businesses to explore collaboration in railway infrastructure, logistics and related engineering sectors. The Indian delegation included six small and medium enterprises led by the Engineering Export Promotion Council (EEPC), along with several multinational companies operating from India. The participating companies held discussions with South African industry representatives and agreed to continue business engagements through follow-up meetings.
India's Consul General in Johannesburg, S. Koventhan, said India could become a long-term partner in South Africa's infrastructure development, given the strong capabilities of Indian companies in rail infrastructure, port modernisation, engineering services, power systems and large-scale project execution.
He said the participation of Indian companies at Africa Rail 2026 reflected the strong commercial relationship between India and South Africa and was expected to create further opportunities in transport, logistics and infrastructure development.
Koventhan also noted that as South Africa seeks to upgrade its rail and logistics ecosystem, Indian companies are well-positioned to offer affordable, reliable and sustainable solutions backed by extensive experience in executing large infrastructure projects. India has undertaken several major railway modernisation initiatives in recent years, including network electrification, station redevelopment, dedicated freight corridors and the rollout of semi-high-speed trains, strengthening its expertise in the sector.
EEPC Joint Director Pallavi Saha said South Africa remains one of India's leading export destinations for engineering products, making it an important market for Indian companies. She said the encouraging response received during the expo highlighted growing interest among South African businesses in Indian railway technologies and engineering capabilities.
According to Saha, the participating small and medium enterprises are looking to establish a foothold in South Africa and assess long-term business opportunities in the region. She also pointed out that India's railway sector is progressing rapidly with nearly complete electrification of the rail network, along with the introduction of high-speed rail initiatives and Vande Bharat trains. She added that India's strict product certification standards would strengthen the competitiveness of engineering exports to African markets.
Saha further said Indian companies also see South Africa as a strategic gateway for expanding their presence across the African continent.
One of the key developments at the expo was the signing of a partnership agreement between South African rail maintenance company Zeromec and India's Premnath Rail, a railway construction and management company.
Premnath Rail Chairman and Chief Executive Officer Vipin Arora said the company's specialised railway machinery could support almost every stage of rail infrastructure development because it offers dedicated equipment for different railway applications. He added that the company also has design and manufacturing capabilities to customise products according to customer requirements. Arora further said that if business volumes increase sufficiently, the company would consider setting up a manufacturing facility in South Africa.
Gabriel Matli, Managing Director of Zeromec, said the partnership with Premnath Rail would help expand the company's equipment portfolio and improve its ability to secure larger railway contracts. He added that stronger equipment support would also enable the company to pursue opportunities in other African countries.
Several other Indian companies also showcased their specialised products during the exhibition.
Bhopal-based Permali Wallace said it is looking to supply South Africa with non-metallic insulation materials used in railway tracks after already serving neighbouring African countries such as Zambia.
Mechelonic Engineers stated that it is India's only manufacturer of rail welding machines and remains optimistic about long-term opportunities in South Africa as investments in rail infrastructure continue over the coming years.
Companies including Vishwas Power from Nagpur, Kaptronics from Bengaluru and Venus Wires from Mumbai also expressed confidence about expanding their business in South Africa as infrastructure investment in the country gathers pace.
Growing engagement between Indian and South African companies comes at a time when both countries are strengthening economic cooperation through trade, manufacturing and infrastructure partnerships. The latest discussions and agreements at Africa Rail Expo indicate that Indian engineering firms are positioning themselves to play a larger role in South Africa's railway modernisation while also using the country as a gateway for wider expansion across Africa.
