Kontron Transportation has won a contract to modernise the railway communications core network for Portugal’s national railway infrastructure. The project will support the country’s transition to the Future Railway Mobile Communication System (FRMCS), the next-generation railway communications standard. The scope includes supplying and installing radio communication infrastructure, testing, migration, training and long-term operational support. The contract further strengthens Kontron Transportation’s presence in Portugal, where the country has been investing in the digital transformation of its railway infrastructure to improve safety, interoperability and network efficiency.
Kontron Transportation has secured a contract to modernise the railway communications core network for Portugal’s railway infrastructure, marking another step in the country’s ongoing rail modernisation programme. The project will support the transition to the Future Railway Mobile Communication System (FRMCS), which is expected to replace the existing GSM-R communication system used across European rail networks.
The company will supply the radio communication infrastructure required for the transition. The project covers the supply, installation, configuration, testing, commissioning and migration of the new system. It also includes training, documentation, maintenance and operational support to ensure the communications network operates efficiently after deployment.
As part of the contract, the new communication system will be integrated with the existing railway infrastructure and applications to enable a smooth transition without disrupting operations. The project is being carried out for Infraestruturas de Portugal, the country's railway infrastructure manager.
Kontron Transportation said the award strengthens its position in the Portuguese railway market and creates opportunities to expand its presence in railway communication technologies. The company indicated that the project also supports the wider adoption of its communication solutions as railway operators prepare for next-generation digital networks. Its Managing Director, Richard Neussl, said the company was proud to support the modernisation of Portugal's railway communication infrastructure and viewed the project as a demonstration of its commitment to delivering reliable communication systems for mission-critical railway operations.
Portugal has been investing in upgrading its railway infrastructure through signalling, telecommunications and digital systems to align with European railway standards. The transition to FRMCS is considered an important step in improving railway safety, interoperability and future connectivity across the European rail network.
