Synopsis

GMR Airports has announced a multi-phase expansion plan for Dr. Babasaheb Ambedkar International Airport in Nagpur, beginning with an initial investment of around INR 300 crore. The first phase will modernise the existing terminal over the next 12–18 months, while subsequent phases will add a new integrated terminal, second runway, cargo infrastructure and Aerocity development. The long-term roadmap aims to increase the airport's annual passenger handling capacity from 3 million to 30 million, with scope for further expansion.

GMR Airports has unveiled a comprehensive multi-phase expansion roadmap for Dr. Babasaheb Ambedkar International Airport in Nagpur, committing an initial investment of approximately INR 300 crore to modernise the facility and strengthen its position as a major aviation and logistics hub in central India. The announcement follows GMR Airports' takeover of the airport's operations under a long-term concession agreement.
The first phase of the project will focus on upgrading the existing terminal building and passenger facilities over the next 12 to 18 months. Planned improvements include enhanced check-in areas, security systems, passenger amenities, operational infrastructure and terminal refurbishment to improve the overall travel experience while increasing operational efficiency.
Beyond the initial upgrade, GMR Airports has outlined a long-term development strategy that includes construction of a new integrated passenger terminal, development of a second runway, expansion of cargo-handling infrastructure and creation of an Aerocity around the airport. The company plans to transform Nagpur into a key aviation, logistics and commercial centre by leveraging its central location and connectivity.
Under the proposed roadmap, the airport's annual passenger handling capacity is expected to increase from the current 3 million passengers to around 30 million over the 30-year concession period. GMR Airports has also indicated that the infrastructure can be further expanded to accommodate up to 50 million passengers annually if future demand warrants additional capacity.
The expansion aligns with the broader vision of developing the airport alongside the Multi-modal International Cargo Hub and Airport at Nagpur (MIHAN), which is designed to strengthen cargo movement, multimodal logistics and industrial development in the region. Enhanced cargo facilities are expected to support manufacturing, exports and warehousing activities, further reinforcing Nagpur's role as a logistics gateway for central India.
GMR Airports said the phased development approach will allow capacity enhancement in line with passenger traffic growth while minimising disruption to ongoing airport operations. The company also plans to integrate sustainable infrastructure and modern airport technologies as part of the redevelopment programme.
The investment comes amid rising domestic air travel demand and continued expansion of airport infrastructure across India. For Nagpur, the modernisation is expected to improve connectivity, attract greater airline interest, facilitate cargo operations and support economic growth across the Vidarbha region. Once completed, the expanded airport is expected to emerge as one of central India's largest aviation and logistics hubs, supporting both passenger mobility and commercial development.
