An Air India flight bound for Delhi aborted its take-off at Mumbai airport after air traffic control instructed the crew to stop when an Air India Express aircraft had not yet vacated the same runway following its arrival from Siliguri. The incident occurred at around 10 pm in the past week and involved a Boeing 777-300ER operated by Air India and a Boeing 737 MAX 8 operated by Air India Express. The airline said the crew followed air traffic control instructions and returned the aircraft to the bay for mandatory checks in line with standard operating procedures. Alternative arrangements were initiated for passengers, while further details, including the number of people on board both aircraft, were not immediately available.
An Air India flight preparing to depart from Mumbai airport for Delhi aborted its take-off run after receiving instructions from air traffic control when an Air India Express aircraft had not yet cleared the same runway. The incident took place at around 10 pm in the past week and was resolved without any reported injuries or damage, according to sources.
The occurrence involved Air India flight AI816, which was scheduled to operate from Mumbai to Delhi using a Boeing 777-300ER aircraft, and Air India Express flight AIX1547, which had arrived from Siliguri on a Boeing 737 MAX 8 aircraft. Sources said the Air India Express aircraft was still on the runway after landing when the Air India flight was preparing for departure from the same runway.
Following instructions from the air traffic controller, the crew of the Air India aircraft discontinued the take-off run to prevent a potential runway conflict. A take-off run refers to the phase during which an aircraft accelerates along the runway before reaching the speed required for lift-off.
In a statement, an Air India spokesperson said the crew operating flight AI816 had stopped the take-off run after receiving directions from air traffic control. The airline stated that the aircraft subsequently returned to the bay.
The airline further said the aircraft would undergo the necessary inspections in accordance with standard operating procedures before returning to service. It also confirmed that alternative arrangements were being made to ensure passengers reached their destination at the earliest.
Air India did not disclose additional operational details regarding the incident, including the precise circumstances that led to the air traffic control instruction or the distance between the two aircraft on the runway at the time.
The number of passengers and crew members on board either aircraft was not immediately available. There was also no immediate statement from airport authorities or air traffic control regarding the sequence of events.
Runway occupancy is managed by air traffic control to ensure that landing and departing aircraft do not use the same runway simultaneously. In this instance, the take-off was halted before the Air India aircraft became airborne after the controller identified that the arriving Air India Express aircraft had not yet vacated the runway.
The incident resulted in a delay to flight AI816 as the aircraft was returned for precautionary checks, while the airline worked to arrange onward travel for affected passengers. Further information about the incident was not immediately available.
