The Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation (AMC) is set to widen roads running along the Kharicut canal into three-lane corridors, marking another phase of its efforts to improve transport infrastructure and urban mobility in the eastern parts of the city. The proposal forms part of a larger redevelopment plan that combines road expansion, drainage improvements and canal rejuvenation to address growing traffic demand while strengthening civic infrastructure.
The Kharicut canal, originally constructed during the British era as an irrigation channel, has gradually become an important urban corridor as Ahmedabad expanded eastwards. With rapid residential and industrial development increasing traffic volumes, the existing road network along the canal has come under pressure, prompting the civic body to redesign the corridor to improve connectivity between key neighbourhoods and reduce travel time for commuters.
Under the proposed plan, roads on both sides of the canal will be widened to accommodate three traffic lanes, creating a more efficient east-west mobility network. The upgraded corridor is expected to improve access to residential areas, industrial clusters and commercial establishments while easing congestion on parallel arterial roads. Civic officials believe the project will also provide alternative traffic routes, helping distribute vehicular movement more evenly across the city's eastern transport network.
The road widening initiative is closely linked with AMC's broader programme to redevelop the Kharicut canal and surrounding water infrastructure. The civic body has already initiated projects to strengthen drainage systems, desilt water channels and improve stormwater management across east Ahmedabad. Officials emphasised the need to synchronise road construction with canal development and utility works to minimise disruption and ensure timely project execution.
