India and Indonesia have agreed to expand their Comprehensive Strategic Partnership by strengthening cooperation across defence, trade, infrastructure, digital connectivity, critical minerals and maritime security during Prime Minister Narendra Modi's state visit to Indonesia. The visit, held at the invitation of Indonesian President Prabowo Subianto, concluded with a joint statement outlining an extensive roadmap for closer bilateral engagement.
The two leaders reviewed progress across the full spectrum of bilateral relations and agreed to maintain regular summit meetings and institutional dialogues to enhance strategic cooperation. They also witnessed the exchange of multiple agreements covering defence, maritime security, health, telecommunications, disaster management, education, space and economic collaboration.
Economic cooperation emerged as a key focus of the discussions. Both countries recognised the complementarities between India's Viksit Bharat 2047 vision and Indonesia Emas 2045, expressing support for expanding bilateral trade and investment. The leaders called for the timely review of the ASEAN-India Trade in Goods Agreement (AITIGA) while committing to address tariff and non-tariff barriers through established bilateral mechanisms.
The two sides also agreed to strengthen collaboration in critical minerals and rare earths to develop resilient supply chains supporting manufacturing industries. Agreements were signed to promote cooperation in mineral technology and steel supply chains, including a strategic joint venture between Steel Authority of India Limited (SAIL) and Indonesia's PT Krakatau Steel to explore the establishment of a stainless-steel slab manufacturing facility in Indonesia.
Infrastructure and connectivity featured prominently in the discussions. Indonesia welcomed India's interest in participating in the integrated development of Sabang Port, with both countries agreeing to examine opportunities covering cruise tourism, shipbuilding, ship repair and offshore energy support services. The leaders also called for greater maritime and air connectivity and looked forward to advancing the Andaman-Aceh connectivity initiative.
Digital cooperation received significant attention, with both sides welcoming progress on cross-border QR payment linkage between the Reserve Bank of India and Bank Indonesia. The launch of Indonesia Open Network, based on India's Open Network for Digital Commerce (ONDC) architecture, was also recognised as a step towards increasing the participation of Indonesian micro, small and medium enterprises in the digital economy.
In defence and maritime cooperation, the leaders reaffirmed their commitment to expanding joint exercises, defence technology collaboration, maritime domain awareness, coastal surveillance, hydrography and defence industrial partnerships. They also welcomed closer cooperation on missile systems, defence manufacturing and maintenance facilities.
Both countries reiterated their commitment to combating terrorism, strengthening cybersecurity cooperation and promoting regional stability in the Indo-Pacific through adherence to international law and freedom of navigation.
The joint statement also highlighted cooperation in healthcare, renewable energy, agriculture, disaster management, education, culture and space technology. With multiple new agreements and institutional partnerships announced, the visit marks a significant step towards expanding India's engagement with Indonesia across strategic, economic and infrastructure sectors while reinforcing cooperation in the broader Indo-Pacific region.
