The nationwide infrastructure innovation competition, supported by the All India Council for Technical Education (AICTE), engaged more than 20,000 students from over 500 institutions. Pimpri Chinchwad College of Engineering secured the national title and a prize package valued at INR 30 lakh. The event also featured an Industry-Academia Conclave focusing on collaboration, technology adoption and talent development to support India's infrastructure sector and the long-term vision of Viksit Bharat 2047.
The National Institute of Construction Management and Research (NICMAR) hosted the National Grand Finale of the inaugural Bharat Nav-Nirmaan Challenge 2025–26 at JW Marriott Mumbai, bringing together students, industry representatives, policymakers and academicians to showcase innovations addressing India's infrastructure and built environment requirements. Shri Nitin Gadkari, Union Minister for Road Transport & Highways, Government of India, attended the event as the chief guest.
Launched in December 2025, the Bharat Nav-Nirmaan Challenge is NICMAR's flagship national innovation competition for students pursuing Civil Engineering, Architecture and other core engineering disciplines. Supported by the All India Council for Technical Education (AICTE), the competition attracted participation from more than 20,000 students representing over 500 educational institutions across the country. The contest progressed through institutional rounds, competitions in 11 cities and three regional finals before selecting three teams for the national finale.
The final round featured teams from IIT Delhi, Maturi Venkata Subba Rao Engineering College and Pimpri Chinchwad College of Engineering. Following an evaluation by a jury comprising industry experts and academicians, Pimpri Chinchwad College of Engineering was declared the winner of the inaugural edition. The winning team received a Global Infrastructure Excellence Tour along with prizes forming part of an overall award pool worth INR 30 lakh.
Addressing participants during the event, Union Minister Shri Nitin Gadkari said future infrastructure development would require sustained investment in research led by young engineers. He stated that educational institutions should focus on need-based research aimed at reducing construction costs without compromising quality while developing technology-driven and cost-effective solutions capable of reducing import dependence. He also highlighted the growing opportunities in precast construction and tunnelling and encouraged NICMAR to develop innovative precast compound wall solutions aligned with the country's infrastructure requirements. The minister congratulated the participating students for their research and contributions.
Ajit Gulabchand, Chairman of the Board of Trustees and Board of Governors at NICMAR, said India's infrastructure ambitions would increasingly depend on the quality of its skilled workforce alongside investment and technology. He noted that the Bharat Nav-Nirmaan Challenge was created to expose students to practical infrastructure challenges and encourage interdisciplinary problem-solving, enabling them to contribute more effectively to the country's infrastructure development.
Alongside the competition, NICMAR organised an Industry-Academia Conclave that brought together policymakers, academic institutions and industry leaders to discuss the future of India's infrastructure ecosystem. Discussions focused on strengthening collaboration between academia and industry, accelerating technology adoption, promoting sustainable and resilient infrastructure, and developing a future-ready talent pipeline for the Construction, Real Estate, Infrastructure and Project Management (CRIP) sector.
Gulabchand added that the initiative reflects NICMAR's efforts to strengthen industry-academia engagement by enabling students to work on practical infrastructure challenges while interacting with professionals from across the sector.
With the completion of its inaugural edition, the Bharat Nav-Nirmaan Challenge has established a national platform for student-led innovation in infrastructure while promoting collaboration between educational institutions and industry to support India's long-term infrastructure development objectives under the Viksit Bharat 2047 vision.
