Trichy IBT Link Road Project Faces Delay, Completion Target Reset for 2028

Synopsis

The Tiruchirappalli Corporation's IBT link road project, designed to connect the Panjapur Integrated Bus Terminus with key state and national highways, is expected to be completed only by early 2028. Delays in land acquisition, pending railway approvals and the absence of administrative sanction for the final phase have slowed construction. While work is progressing on the first two phases, officials are addressing project bottlenecks to improve connectivity and support traffic movement around the city's new transport hub.

The Tiruchirappalli Corporation's Integrated Bus Terminus (IBT) link road project has been delayed, with completion now expected only by early 2028 instead of the earlier target of late 2026. The revised timeline follows delays in land acquisition, pending statutory approvals and administrative clearances affecting different phases of the project.
The link road is being developed to connect the Panjapur Integrated Bus Terminus with major state and national highways passing through Tiruchirappalli. Once completed, the road is expected to improve access to the bus terminus, reduce congestion on existing city roads and facilitate smoother movement of passenger and commercial traffic.
The project has been divided into three phases. Phase I, connecting Panjapur and Karumandapam, was sanctioned at approximately INR 81.7 crore. Around 35% of the work has been completed. However, progress has slowed because approval is still pending from the Southern Railway for the construction of a railway road overbridge near E Pudur MGR Nagar.
Phase II, covering the Woraiyur–Kudamurutti checkpost stretch, has achieved only about 15% completion. Officials attributed the slow progress primarily to delays in acquiring the required land for the road alignment. Land acquisition remains one of the key challenges affecting the overall implementation schedule.
The third and longest phase, connecting Karumandapam and Woraiyur, has not yet received administrative sanction. This section includes multiple elevated road stretches designed to improve traffic flow through densely populated areas, including an elevated segment near the Woraiyur Kasivilangi fish market. Work on this phase cannot begin until the necessary approvals and funding are secured.
District Collector Pratik Tayal recently reviewed the progress of the project and inspected ongoing works along the Koraiyar and Kudamurutti riverbanks. The proposed corridor will eventually provide an important connection between the Trichy–Madurai National Highway and the Trichy–Karur National Highway, improving regional connectivity around the city.
The IBT link road is considered an important supporting infrastructure project for the Panjapur Integrated Bus Terminus, which has become a major transport hub for Tiruchirappalli. Once operational, the road is expected to improve traffic distribution, reduce travel time for buses entering and leaving the terminal, and enhance connectivity between the city's western and southern corridors.
Despite the revised completion timeline, the corporation has indicated that work on the approved phases will continue while efforts are made to expedite land acquisition, secure railway approvals and obtain administrative clearance for the remaining section. Successful completion of these processes will be essential to achieving the revised target of early 2028.
