Synopsis

• Union Housing and Urban Affairs Minister Shri Manohar Lal Khattar distributed sanction letters to 31 beneficiaries under Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana-Urban (PMAY-U 2.0) in Karnal, reaffirming the government's commitment to providing permanent housing to eligible urban families.
• The event highlighted the Centre's ongoing push to expand affordable housing through the beneficiary-led construction component of the scheme.
• Khattar said the initiative aims to ensure that every eligible household has access to a pucca home with basic civic amenities.
• The distribution comes as PMAY-U 2.0 continues to scale up housing approvals across states to support the government's 'Housing for All' vision.

The Centre has taken another step towards expanding affordable urban housing, with Union Minister for Housing and Urban Affairs Manohar Lal Khattar handing over sanction letters to 31 beneficiaries under Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana-Urban (PMAY-U 2.0) during a programme in Karnal. The beneficiaries will now be eligible to receive financial assistance for constructing permanent homes under the scheme's beneficiary-led construction component.
Addressing the beneficiaries, Khattar said the government's objective is to ensure that every eligible poor family in urban India owns a safe and permanent house equipped with essential civic amenities. He noted that housing is not merely about providing shelter but also about improving living standards and strengthening the social and economic security of families.
The minister said PMAY-U 2.0 has been designed to widen access to affordable housing by supporting eligible beneficiaries through financial assistance while encouraging planned urban development. He added that the scheme continues to focus on economically weaker sections, low-income groups and other eligible households that do not own a permanent dwelling.
The sanction letters formally approve beneficiaries for assistance under the scheme, enabling them to begin the process of constructing their homes after completing the required procedural formalities. Financial support is released in stages as construction progresses, subject to verification and compliance with scheme guidelines.
PMAY-U 2.0 forms part of the Centre's broader affordable housing programme, under which states and urban local bodies identify eligible beneficiaries and forward proposals for approval. Recent meetings of the Central Sanctioning and Monitoring Committee have approved additional housing projects across multiple states, taking the cumulative number of sanctioned houses under PMAY-U 2.0 beyond 16 lakh. Women account for the overwhelming majority of beneficiaries, with around 97% of sanctioned houses allotted in their names or jointly with family members.
The Karnal event also reflects Haryana's continued implementation of the housing mission. Earlier this year, the state approved thousands of additional housing projects under PMAY-U 2.0 across urban local bodies to expand access to affordable homes for eligible families. The latest distribution of sanction letters marks another milestone in translating those approvals into on-ground housing construction.
The government expects that continued approvals, timely fund disbursement and coordination between the Centre, state governments and urban local bodies will accelerate the delivery of permanent housing while supporting the broader objective of inclusive urban development.
