UP cabinet clears renaming of Shahjahanpur’s Jalalabad to Parshurampuri

Synopsis

• The Uttar Pradesh Cabinet has approved the renaming of Jalalabad town and its municipal body in Shahjahanpur district as Parshurampuri.
• The decision follows the Union government's no-objection approval granted in 2025 and formalises a proposal that had been pending for several years.
• The renaming is based on the town's religious and historical association with Lord Parshuram, whom many believe was born in the region.
• The move is the latest in a series of place-name changes undertaken by the Uttar Pradesh government to align locations with their cultural and historical identities.

The Uttar Pradesh government has approved the renaming of Jalalabad in Shahjahanpur district as Parshurampuri, giving official recognition to a long-pending proposal rooted in the town's religious and cultural significance. The decision was taken by the state cabinet chaired by Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath and also extends to the municipal body, which will now be known as Parshurampuri Nagar Palika Parishad.
The proposal to rename the town has been under consideration for several years. Local representatives and civic authorities had argued that the existing name did not reflect the area's historical identity, as Jalalabad is widely associated with the birthplace of Lord Parshuram, the sixth avatar of Lord Vishnu in Hindu tradition. The municipal council had passed resolutions supporting the change in 2018 and again in 2023 before the proposal was forwarded to the state government.
The Union Ministry of Home Affairs had issued a no-objection to the renaming proposal in August 2025 after examining the request submitted by the Uttar Pradesh government. With the Centre's approval already in place, the latest cabinet decision completes the state's formal process for adopting the new name in official records and administrative use.
Supporters of the change point to the presence of an ancient Parshuram temple and several sites linked to the sage in and around the town. Over the past few years, the state government has also undertaken works to improve the temple complex and surrounding areas as part of efforts to promote the location as a religious tourism destination. Officials believe the new name better reflects the town's cultural heritage and historical importance.
Jalalabad itself traces its origins to the Mughal period and is believed to have derived its name from Emperor Jalal-ud-din Muhammad Akbar. The renaming marks a shift towards highlighting the town's religious associations rather than its Mughal-era nomenclature. Similar changes have been implemented elsewhere in Uttar Pradesh in recent years as part of the state's policy of restoring what it describes as traditional and culturally significant place names.
The decision adds Parshurampuri to the growing list of renamed towns and cities in Uttar Pradesh, including Prayagraj and Ayodhya. While supporters view such changes as efforts to revive historical and civilisational identity, critics have questioned whether administrative attention should instead focus on developmental priorities. Nevertheless, the state government has maintained that preserving cultural heritage remains an integral part of its governance agenda.
