The proposed INR 1,618 crore Bhopal–Vidisha four-lane highway project has remained stalled for more than eight months, despite receiving clearance from the State Level Empowered Committee (SLEC), as it continues to await approval from the Madhya Pradesh Cabinet. The 45-km project aims to widen State Highway-18, improving connectivity between Bhopal, Vidisha and the UNESCO World Heritage Site of Sanchi, while reducing travel time and easing congestion. The prolonged delay has affected commuters, tourism and regional development, with road users continuing to rely on longer alternative routes.
The proposed INR 1,618 crore Bhopal–Vidisha four-lane highway project has remained in limbo for more than eight months, despite completing key administrative formalities and securing clearance from the State Level Empowered Committee (SLEC). The project is still awaiting approval from the Madhya Pradesh Cabinet, delaying the commencement of a major road infrastructure initiative intended to improve connectivity between Bhopal and Vidisha while supporting tourism and regional economic development.
The project involves widening the existing 45-kilometre State Highway-18 into a modern four-lane highway under the Hybrid Annuity Model (HAM). The corridor serves as the primary road link between Bhopal, Vidisha and Sanchi, a UNESCO World Heritage Site that attracts thousands of domestic and international visitors annually. The highway is also an important route for daily commuters, freight movement and commercial transport, making its upgrade a long-pending infrastructure priority for the region.
The existing two-lane road has deteriorated considerably over the years due to increasing traffic volumes and inadequate capacity. As a result, many motorists travelling between Bhopal and Vidisha currently divert through the Bhopal–Raisen route before joining the Sanchi–Vidisha stretch. This alternative route increases travel distance by nearly 10 kilometres, adding to fuel consumption, travel time and congestion on the already busy Bhopal–Raisen corridor. The proposed four-laning is expected to eliminate these inefficiencies while improving road safety and transport efficiency.
The highway project is being implemented by the Madhya Pradesh Road Development Corporation (MPRDC) and is expected to play a significant role in strengthening connectivity across central Madhya Pradesh. Besides facilitating smoother passenger movement, the upgraded corridor is expected to improve logistics, support trade and provide better access to educational institutions, industrial areas and tourism destinations. Improved road infrastructure is also expected to stimulate investment and economic activity in Vidisha and surrounding districts.
Although the project has cleared the required technical and administrative processes, the final Cabinet approval has remained pending since late 2025. Reports indicate that the prolonged delay has created uncertainty regarding project timelines despite widespread recognition of its strategic importance. Stakeholders have expressed concern that postponing the project could further escalate construction costs and delay the economic benefits expected from the upgraded highway.
The project also assumes importance from a tourism perspective. Sanchi, one of India's most significant Buddhist heritage destinations, depends heavily on road connectivity for visitor access. Improved travel conditions between Bhopal and Sanchi are expected to enhance the overall tourism experience while encouraging higher visitor footfall to the historic site and neighbouring destinations. Better infrastructure could also benefit local businesses, hospitality establishments and transport operators that rely on tourism-related activity.
Infrastructure experts believe the project is critical to addressing growing traffic demand along the Bhopal–Vidisha corridor and improving regional mobility. Once approved, the four-lane highway is expected to reduce congestion, shorten travel time, enhance road safety and provide long-term economic benefits through improved connectivity and logistics efficiency. Until the Cabinet grants final approval, however, the project remains stalled, leaving commuters and businesses waiting for a major transport upgrade that has already completed most preliminary approvals.
