Synopsis

Tata Motors has partnered with Welspun Renewable Energy Pvt Ltd to develop an 86 MW wind-solar hybrid renewable energy project that will supply clean electricity to four of its commercial vehicle manufacturing plants across Jharkhand, Uttar Pradesh, Uttarakhand and Karnataka. The project is expected to generate around 200 million units of renewable power every year and reduce more than 1.4 lakh tonnes of carbon dioxide emissions annually. The initiative supports Tata Motors' clean energy transition and aligns with its RE100 commitment to source 100 per cent renewable electricity by 2030.

Tata Motors Ltd has entered into a partnership with Welspun Renewable Energy Pvt Ltd to co-develop an 86 MW wind-solar hybrid renewable energy project that will supply clean electricity to four of its commercial vehicle manufacturing plants located in Jharkhand, Uttar Pradesh, Uttarakhand and Karnataka.
The companies have signed a long-term Power Purchase Agreement (PPA) supported through co-investment to develop the project. The hybrid renewable energy facility will provide dedicated green power to Tata Motors' manufacturing units, ensuring a reliable energy supply for commercial vehicle production while reducing dependence on conventional power sources.
According to the company, the project is expected to generate around 200 million units of clean electricity every year. It is also estimated to reduce more than 1.4 lakh tonnes of carbon dioxide emissions annually, contributing to lower emissions across Tata Motors' manufacturing operations.
Tata Motors Vice President – Operations, Vishal Badshah, said the project reflects the company's continued focus on building greener and more energy-efficient manufacturing operations. He stated that the scale and integrated nature of the wind-solar hybrid project would help Tata Motors secure a reliable renewable energy supply for its key commercial vehicle plants while steadily reducing carbon emissions across its operations.
The company said the initiative is expected to play an important role in accelerating its clean energy transition and supporting its RE100 commitment to source 100 per cent of its electricity requirements from renewable energy by 2030. Tata Motors has been increasing the use of renewable energy across its manufacturing facilities as part of its broader sustainability and decarbonisation strategy.
Welspun Renewable Energy Pvt Ltd Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer, Kapil Maheshwari, said the partnership marks an important milestone for the company. He said the agreement goes beyond a conventional power purchase arrangement and represents a collaborative model that can help large manufacturers in India reduce carbon emissions and progress towards their net-zero and sustainability goals.
The partnership also reflects the growing trend of large industrial companies adopting hybrid renewable energy projects to secure long-term clean power while meeting environmental targets. Wind-solar hybrid projects are increasingly being preferred as they provide a more stable and balanced renewable energy supply compared with standalone wind or solar installations.
