Tripura Chief Minister Shri Manik Saha reviewed the progress of National Highway development projects with Union Road Transport and Highways Minister Nitin Gadkari in New Delhi, focusing on accelerating ongoing works, improving road maintenance and strengthening connectivity across the state. During the meeting, the Centre approved the alignment for the Churaibari–Champaknagar four-laning project, a key initiative expected to enhance regional connectivity and facilitate smoother movement of passengers and freight. Saha also highlighted that Tripura's National Highway network has expanded from 198 km in 2014 to around 923 km in 2026, reflecting significant investments in the state's road infrastructure.
Tripura Chief Minister Shri Manik Saha held a high-level review meeting with Union Minister for Road Transport and Highways Shri Nitin Gadkari in New Delhi to assess the progress of National Highway development projects and chart the roadmap for future road infrastructure in the state. The discussions focused on accelerating ongoing highway works, improving maintenance standards and identifying new projects to strengthen Tripura's connectivity with neighbouring states and the rest of the country.
The review comes as Tripura continues to witness rapid expansion of its highway network under various central infrastructure programmes. Officials emphasised the need for timely execution of ongoing projects, removal of implementation bottlenecks and closer coordination between the state government and the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways to ensure that strategic road projects are completed within schedule.
One of the key outcomes of the meeting was the approval of the alignment for the Churaibari–Champaknagar four-laning project, which is expected to significantly enhance road connectivity across the state. The proposed corridor will improve traffic movement, reduce travel time and strengthen freight transportation, benefiting both local commuters and commercial vehicles. Authorities believe the project will also improve access to border areas and support economic development by facilitating smoother movement of goods and services.
Apart from reviewing ongoing construction activities, the discussions also covered the maintenance of existing National Highways. The Centre and the state government agreed on the importance of preserving completed infrastructure through timely repairs and better maintenance practices to ensure safer travel and longer asset life. New highway proposals aimed at improving regional connectivity and supporting future economic growth were also deliberated during the meeting.
Chief Minister Saha thanked the Union government for its continued support in expanding Tripura's road infrastructure. He noted that the state's National Highway network has grown substantially from 198 kilometres in 2014 to approximately 923 kilometres in 2026, reflecting sustained investment in connectivity projects. According to the Chief Minister, improved highway infrastructure has strengthened access to remote regions, encouraged investment and enhanced opportunities for trade and tourism across the state.
Road infrastructure has emerged as a key priority for Tripura, given its strategic location in the Northeast and its growing role in regional trade. Better highways are expected to improve connectivity with neighbouring states and international border points, supporting logistics, agriculture, industry and cross-border commerce. The state government has consistently sought greater investment in transport infrastructure to unlock economic potential and improve access to essential services.
The meeting also reaffirmed the Centre's commitment to strengthening infrastructure in the northeastern region through time-bound execution of highway projects. Both leaders stressed that faster completion of National Highway works would improve mobility, reduce transportation costs and contribute to balanced regional development. As multiple projects progress simultaneously, Tripura is expected to witness a significant improvement in road connectivity over the coming years, creating new opportunities for economic growth and enhancing the quality of life for residents across the state.
