Navi Mumbai Mayor Sujata Patil inspected several flood-prone locations across the municipal limits following three days of continuous rainfall to review the city's monsoon preparedness and emergency response measures. During the inspection, she assessed waterlogging from Belapur to Digha, reviewed dewatering operations and directed officials to strengthen drainage management. The visit also followed an incident beneath the Nerul LP flyover where two young women sustained electric shocks in a waterlogged area and were admitted to hospital. According to the Navi Mumbai Municipal Corporation (NMMC), both are in stable condition. The civic body recorded 105.46 mm of rainfall across its jurisdiction on July 1 and has deployed emergency personnel and pumping equipment in vulnerable locations.
Navi Mumbai Mayor Sujata Patil conducted inspections across several low-lying and flood-prone areas within the Navi Mumbai Municipal Corporation (NMMC) limits in the past week following continuous rainfall over the previous three days. The inspection covered locations from Belapur to Digha where waterlogging had been reported. City Engineer Aradvad, Deputy Commissioner of the Solid Waste Management Department Dr Ajay Gadde and other municipal officials accompanied the mayor during the field visit.
The inspection followed an incident reported to the Disaster Management Cell at around 1.15 pm beneath the Nerul LP flyover, where rainwater had accumulated. According to the civic body, 17-year-old Shubhangi Balkhande from Gandhi Nagar, Nerul MIDC, and 19-year-old Ujjwala Wagh from Shirvane Village, Sector 1, Nerul, suffered electric shocks after coming into contact with the waterlogged area. They were initially admitted to DY Patil Hospital in Nerul before being shifted by the municipal corporation to Fortis Hospital in Vashi for continued medical observation. The NMMC stated that both patients are in stable condition.
Patil visited the injured women and their family members and directed officials to immediately investigate the source of the electrical current that caused the incident. She instructed the concerned departments to ascertain whether contact between floodwater and electrical infrastructure had led to the electric shock and to take appropriate remedial measures.
The municipal corporation stated that heavy rainfall coinciding with high tide during the afternoon resulted in water accumulation at several low-lying locations across the city. Following instructions from Municipal Commissioner Dr Kailas Shinde, emergency response teams from the respective ward offices were deployed to provide assistance, while dewatering pumps were installed to remove accumulated rainwater.
During her inspection, the mayor reviewed the functioning of the pumping systems and directed officials to deploy additional dewatering pumps wherever required to ensure residents experienced minimal disruption. She also instructed municipal staff to remain on continuous alert until normal conditions were restored.
Patil further directed officials to improve roadside drainage by excavating roadside channels and clearing blocked stormwater inlets to facilitate the rapid discharge of accumulated rainwater. She also instructed civic teams to regularly remove plastic waste and other debris from drains to prevent blockages and improve stormwater flow during the ongoing monsoon.
According to the NMMC, the city recorded 105.46 mm of rainfall between 8.30 am and 6.30 pm on July 1. Rainfall recorded across municipal divisions included 139.40 mm in Belapur, 65.40 mm in Nerul, 57.60 mm in Vashi, 102.20 mm in Koparkhairane, 128.40 mm in Airoli and 139.80 mm in Digha. Cumulative rainfall across the municipal area has reached 542.33 mm this monsoon. The Morbe Dam catchment also recorded 270.80 mm of rainfall during the same period.
The mayor noted that rising water levels in the Morbe Dam had eased earlier concerns regarding declining storage. She said the municipal administration would continue monitoring the situation across the city and maintain field-level emergency response measures to minimise the impact of heavy rainfall on residents and urban infrastructure.
