Synopsis

• Pune IT City Metro Rail Corporation (PITCMRL) has completed a 60-metre-long foot overbridge (FOB) at Wakad Metro Station on Metro Line 3 to improve pedestrian safety and last-mile connectivity across the • Mumbai–Bengaluru Highway.
• The bridge provides a safe crossing for both metro commuters and the general public, reducing dependence on busy road crossings and improving access to Wakad Chowk.
• Installed during carefully planned late-night operations, the structure is part of preparations for the commercial launch of Pune Metro Line 3 and the development of Wakad as a multimodal transit hub.
• The project is expected to strengthen integration between metro services, buses, taxis and other last-mile transport options while enhancing commuter convenience in one of Pune's busiest transport corridors.

Pune IT City Metro Rail Corporation Limited (PITCMRL) has completed the installation of a 60-metre-long foot overbridge (FOB) at Wakad Metro Station, marking an important step towards improving pedestrian safety and strengthening last-mile connectivity ahead of the launch of Pune Metro Line 3. The new bridge spans the Mumbai–Bengaluru National Highway (NH-48), enabling pedestrians to cross the busy carriageway safely while providing direct access to the upcoming metro station.
Wakad Chowk is one of Pune's busiest transport intersections, witnessing heavy vehicular movement throughout the day. Thousands of commuters, office-goers and residents travel through the junction daily, particularly those heading towards the Hinjawadi IT hub. Until now, crossing the highway safely remained a major challenge for pedestrians due to high traffic volumes and limited crossing infrastructure. The new FOB addresses this concern by offering a dedicated, grade-separated pedestrian crossing.
The bridge has been designed for use not only by metro passengers but also by the general public. By connecting Wakad Metro Station with the opposite side of the highway, it is expected to reduce conflicts between pedestrians and vehicles, improve commuter convenience and encourage greater use of public transport. Authorities believe the structure will significantly improve access to surrounding residential areas, commercial establishments and public transport facilities.
Installation of the bridge was carried out during late-night hours over two days to minimise disruption to traffic on the busy national highway. The operation involved heavy lifting equipment, including a high-capacity crane, along with coordinated traffic diversions and safety measures implemented by project authorities and local agencies. This approach allowed construction teams to complete the installation while maintaining traffic flow during daytime hours.
The FOB forms part of the broader infrastructure being developed around Wakad Metro Station as Pune Metro Line 3 approaches commercial operations. The corridor is expected to connect key residential neighbourhoods with the Hinjawadi IT district, improving mobility for thousands of daily commuters. Authorities are also working towards integrating metro services with buses, taxis, shared mobility and other last-mile transport options to create a seamless multimodal transport network.
Officials have indicated that civil works at Wakad Metro Station are nearing completion, with finishing activities and station infrastructure progressing ahead of the commencement of passenger services. Trial runs on the corridor have already been completed, while the project awaits the remaining statutory approvals before commercial operations begin.
Urban transport experts believe such pedestrian infrastructure plays a vital role in improving metro accessibility and encouraging greater adoption of mass transit systems. Safe and convenient access to stations is considered essential for increasing ridership, reducing dependence on private vehicles and promoting sustainable urban mobility. With the completion of the Wakad foot overbridge, commuters are expected to benefit from safer highway crossings, better connectivity and a more integrated public transport experience as Metro Line 3 becomes operational.
