The Union Cabinet has approved two major highway infrastructure projects in Delhi and Uttar Pradesh with a combined investment of around INR 14,115 crore. The projects include a six-lane tunnel connecting Dwarka Expressway to Nelson Mandela Marg in Delhi and a new access-controlled highway section between Kanpur and Kabrai in Uttar Pradesh. The projects are aimed at improving regional connectivity, reducing travel time, easing traffic congestion, and strengthening the National Highway network as the Centre continues to invest in transport infrastructure across the country.
The Union Cabinet has approved two major road infrastructure projects in Delhi and Uttar Pradesh with a combined investment of about INR 14,115 crore. The approvals are part of the Centre's ongoing efforts to improve highway connectivity, ease traffic congestion, and support faster movement of people and goods across key regions.
The Cabinet approved the construction of a six-lane road tunnel on NH-148AE, connecting the Dwarka Expressway with Nelson Mandela Marg in Vasant Kunj, Delhi. Information and Broadcasting Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw said after the Cabinet meeting that the project has been cleared for development at an estimated cost of INR 6,969.67 crore.
The proposed tunnel will have a total length of 8.1 kilometres and is expected to provide a direct link between the Dwarka Expressway and South Delhi. The project is aimed at reducing congestion on existing roads, improving travel efficiency, and strengthening connectivity between Delhi, Gurugram and the Indira Gandhi International Airport. It is also expected to ease traffic movement on major routes such as NH-48 and surrounding arterial roads.
The Cabinet, chaired by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, also approved the construction of the 117.7-kilometre Kanpur-Kabrai section of NH-34 in Uttar Pradesh. The project will be developed as a four/six-lane access-controlled highway at an estimated cost of INR 7,145.14 crore.
The new highway is expected to improve connectivity between central and (Bundelkhand) regions of Uttar Pradesh by providing a faster and safer corridor for passenger and freight traffic. It is also expected to support industrial, agricultural and economic activities by improving access to key markets and logistics networks.
The approvals come as the Centre continues to expand the National Highway network through large-scale investments in road infrastructure. In recent years, the government has focused on developing access-controlled highways, expressways and urban connectivity projects to improve mobility and reduce travel time across major cities and economic corridors.
