Synopsis

• Maharashtra has infused another INR 30 crore into the Nagpur Metro Phase-II project, taking its total equity contribution to INR 607 crore.
• The latest funding means the state has released over 60% of its committed equity share of INR 998.20 crore for the metro expansion.
• Nagpur Metro Phase-II spans 43.80 km and will improve connectivity to Kanhan, Butibori, Hingna and Transport Nagar, supporting the city's expanding urban areas.
• The project has also received approval for a 1.4-km extension of the Kamptee corridor, while construction and land acquisition continue across multiple sections.

The Maharashtra government has approved an additional INR 30 crore as equity support for the Nagpur Metro Phase-II project, taking its total equity contribution to INR 607 crore. The latest fund release takes the state's contribution to more than 60% of its total committed equity of INR 998.20 crore, reaffirming its financial support for the metro expansion.
The fresh capital infusion was cleared by the state's Urban Development Department as construction activities continue across the project. Nagpur Metro Phase-II is one of Maharashtra's key urban infrastructure projects and is aimed at expanding the city's mass rapid transit network beyond the existing metro corridors.
The second phase covers a 43.80-km metro network connecting Kanhan, Butibori, Hingna and Transport Nagar with the existing metro system. The expanded network is expected to improve connectivity between Nagpur city and its suburban and industrial areas, reduce travel time and encourage greater use of public transport.
Construction work is progressing across multiple stretches of the project, while land acquisition has also advanced significantly. A substantial portion of the required land has already been acquired, allowing civil works to move ahead on several corridors. The state government has been releasing equity funds in phases to ensure the project maintains construction momentum and meets its implementation schedule.
The project has also moved a step forward after receiving approval for a 1.4-km extension of the Kamptee corridor. The extension is expected to improve last-mile connectivity and expand metro access to additional residential and commercial pockets in the region. It forms part of the broader plan to strengthen Nagpur's public transport network in line with future passenger demand.
Nagpur Metro Phase-II builds on the success of Phase-I, which connected several important residential, commercial and institutional areas across the city. The second phase is designed to extend metro connectivity to emerging growth centres, industrial clusters and surrounding suburbs, supporting planned urban expansion while offering a more efficient mode of daily transport.
The project is jointly funded by the Government of India, the Government of Maharashtra and other financing agencies. Apart from improving urban mobility, the metro expansion is expected to support transit-oriented development, reduce dependence on private vehicles and enhance connectivity across one of central India's fastest-growing cities.
