Synopsis

Bhogapuram International Airport in Andhra Pradesh is likely to be inaugurated by Prime Minister Narendra Modi in the third week of July, with commercial operations expected to begin shortly thereafter. Developed by GMR Group under a public-private partnership model, the greenfield airport has an initial annual capacity of six million passengers. The project will replace civilian operations at Visakhapatnam Airport and strengthen aviation, logistics and regional connectivity across north coastal Andhra Pradesh.

The greenfield Bhogapuram International Airport in Vizianagaram district, Andhra Pradesh, is likely to be inaugurated by Prime Minister Narendra Modi during the third week of July, with commercial flight operations expected to begin soon after, marking a major milestone in the state's aviation infrastructure expansion.
According to officials familiar with the preparations, the inauguration schedule is being finalised based on the Prime Minister's availability. Commercial services are planned to commence in early July, with airlines shifting operations from the existing Visakhapatnam Airport to the new facility once it becomes operational.
Developed by GMR Visakhapatnam International Airport Ltd under a public-private partnership model, the airport has been built near Bhogapuram, around 50 km from Visakhapatnam. The facility has an initial capacity to handle six million passengers annually, with provision for phased expansion as passenger traffic grows.
The airport features a 3,800-metre runway capable of handling wide-body aircraft, a modern passenger terminal, Digi Yatra-enabled facilities, cargo infrastructure and advanced navigation systems. Authorities have completed regulatory validation flights, an important requirement before commencing commercial operations.
State and central agencies have also accelerated work on approach roads and supporting infrastructure to improve connectivity between Visakhapatnam, Vizianagaram and the airport. Multiple road projects are nearing completion to facilitate passenger access before operations begin, while the Andhra Pradesh government is also planning electric bus services connecting major urban centres to the airport.
The new airport will replace the existing civilian terminal operating from the naval airbase at Visakhapatnam. Airport authorities have advised airlines, travel agents and passengers to verify departure details for flights scheduled after commercial operations shift to Bhogapuram.
The project forms part of Andhra Pradesh's broader strategy to strengthen transport infrastructure and improve regional connectivity. Besides serving passengers from Visakhapatnam, the airport is expected to cater to Vizianagaram, Srikakulam and neighbouring districts, while supporting tourism, cargo movement and industrial growth across north coastal Andhra Pradesh.
With construction substantially complete and operational clearances progressing, authorities are focusing on the remaining connectivity works and logistical arrangements ahead of the inauguration. The airport is expected to become one of the state's key aviation gateways, complementing ongoing investments in road, logistics and industrial infrastructure.
