A major fire swept through a cluster of warehouses in Bhiwandi, Thane district, on Sunday, destroying storage facilities stocked with combustible goods and prompting a prolonged firefighting operation involving multiple emergency response agencies. Officials confirmed that there were no casualties, although substantial property losses are feared.
The blaze erupted at a warehouse complex in the Bhinar–Nimbavali area, one of Bhiwandi's prominent logistics and warehousing zones. Initial reports indicated that the fire originated in a warehouse before spreading rapidly to adjoining units housing timber, tyres, wooden pallets, plastic products and other materials that accelerated the spread of flames. Thick plumes of smoke were visible across the surrounding area as emergency teams worked to isolate the affected structures.
Fire tenders from Bhiwandi were joined by teams from neighbouring civic bodies to prevent the blaze from spreading further across the warehouse cluster. Firefighters remained at the site for several hours, using multiple water tankers and specialised equipment to bring the situation under control while protecting nearby warehouses from catching fire. The operation continued well into the day because of the large quantity of combustible inventory stored inside the affected buildings.
Authorities stated that all workers and occupants were evacuated safely before the fire intensified, resulting in no reported injuries or fatalities. Emergency personnel also secured adjoining premises to minimise the risk to nearby businesses operating within the industrial area. Officials continued cooling operations even after the flames were largely contained to prevent any possibility of reignition.
Preliminary assessments suggest that the incident caused extensive damage to warehouse structures and stored inventory. The exact value of the losses is yet to be determined, with officials expected to undertake a detailed survey once the site is declared safe for inspection.
The cause of the fire has not yet been established. Investigating agencies are expected to examine electrical installations, storage conditions and other possible factors that may have contributed to the incident. Fire safety compliance and the adequacy of emergency response infrastructure within the warehouse complex are also likely to form part of the inquiry.
Bhiwandi has emerged as one of the Mumbai Metropolitan Region's largest warehousing and logistics hubs, accommodating distribution centres serving e-commerce, manufacturing and retail sectors. The concentration of large storage facilities handling combustible goods has made fire prevention and emergency preparedness a critical concern for operators and regulatory authorities.
Officials said firefighting operations would continue until all hotspots were extinguished and the affected structures were declared safe. A comprehensive investigation is expected to determine the sequence of events leading to the blaze and recommend measures to reduce the risk of similar incidents at industrial warehouse facilities in the future.
