Synopsis

• The Chandigarh Administration has officially permitted the use of eligible residential properties as Bed & Breakfast establishments under a newly notified tourism policy.
• The initiative aims to promote affordable homestay accommodation, strengthen the city's tourism ecosystem and provide homeowners with an additional source of income.
• Only owner-occupied residential properties measuring at least 500 square yards will be eligible, subject to registration and compliance with prescribed conditions.
• Applicants must obtain all required permissions and No Objection Certificates (NOCs) before commencing operations under the policy.

The Chandigarh Administration has notified the use of residential properties for Bed & Breakfast (B&B) establishments, paving the way for eligible homeowners to offer regulated homestay accommodation under the city's newly framed Bed & Breakfast Policy.
The notification has been issued by the Estates Department under Rule 9(i) of the Chandigarh Estate Rules, 2007, with the approval of the Chief Administrator and the prior approval of the Administrator of Union Territory Chandigarh, Gulab Chand Kataria.
The policy seeks to strengthen Chandigarh's tourism sector by encouraging authentic, affordable and locally hosted accommodation for visitors. By promoting homestays, the administration aims to complement the city's existing hospitality infrastructure while offering tourists a more personalised experience of local culture and hospitality.
In addition to expanding accommodation options, the initiative is expected to create supplementary income opportunities for homeowners through the productive use of residential properties with relatively limited investment.
Under the notified guidelines, only residential units with a minimum plot size of 500 square yards will qualify for registration as Bed & Breakfast establishments. The property must be registered under the Tourism Department's Bed & Breakfast Policy, and only the owner of the residential unit will be eligible to apply.
Applicants will also be required to obtain all necessary statutory approvals and No Objection Certificates (NOCs) as specified under the policy before commencing operations. Compliance with all operational, safety and regulatory conditions prescribed by the Tourism Department will be mandatory.
The notification marks a significant step in diversifying Chandigarh's tourism offerings by promoting regulated homestays while ensuring that residential properties operating under the scheme adhere to defined standards and administrative oversight.
