Synopsis

The Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA) has introduced a ‘Weekly Public Transport Day’ in Bandra-Kurla Complex (BKC), encouraging nearly two lakh professionals working in Mumbai’s largest business district to use public or shared transport every Friday. Launched in collaboration with WRI India on World Environment Day, the initiative seeks to reduce traffic congestion, lower emissions and improve mobility across the commercial hub. The programme was announced during a roundtable attended by government officials, transport agencies, corporate representatives and mobility experts. A mobility study presented at the meeting revealed that a majority of BKC commuters continue to rely on private vehicles, while daily travel times remain high. The initiative also comes amid expanding metro connectivity in the district.

The Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA) has launched a ‘Weekly Public Transport Day’ in Bandra-Kurla Complex (BKC), urging the nearly two lakh professionals commuting to the business district each day to opt for public or shared transport every Friday. The initiative, introduced in partnership with WRI India on World Environment Day, is aimed at easing traffic congestion, reducing pollution levels and promoting sustainable mobility across one of Mumbai’s busiest commercial centres.
The announcement was made during a high-level roundtable discussion attended by senior government officials, representatives of transport agencies, corporate stakeholders and mobility experts. Participants agreed to encourage employees and organisations operating within BKC to adopt public transport or shared mobility options on a weekly basis as part of a broader effort to improve commuting patterns in the district.
According to MMRDA, the initiative is intended to address increasing mobility challenges in BKC, which attracts a substantial daily workforce from across the Mumbai Metropolitan Region. Stakeholders participating in the discussions pledged support for measures that promote sustainable commuting and reduce dependence on private vehicles.
A mobility study presented during the meeting highlighted the scale of the challenge. The findings showed that 52 per cent of commuters travelling to BKC continue to depend on private vehicles, taxis and autorickshaws. In comparison, only 25 per cent currently use public transport for their daily commute. The study also found that more than 54 per cent of commuters spend over two hours travelling each day, underlining concerns around travel efficiency and accessibility.
MMRDA Metropolitan Commissioner Sanjay Mukherjee said that even a modest shift towards public transport and shared mobility could help reduce congestion levels, improve commuting efficiency and lower transport-related emissions within the business district. He noted that with nearly two lakh professionals travelling to BKC every day, encouraging public transport use even once a week could generate a meaningful impact on both mobility and environmental outcomes.
The authority stated that the initiative gains added relevance as metro connectivity in and around BKC continues to expand. While Metro Line 3 is already operational, the upcoming Metro Lines 2B and 4 are expected to further strengthen connectivity, bringing most parts of the commercial district within one kilometre of a metro station.
MMRDA believes the enhanced rail-based transit network, combined with behavioural changes encouraged through initiatives such as the Weekly Public Transport Day, could support a gradual shift towards more sustainable travel patterns in BKC and help improve the overall commuting experience for workers in the district.
