The National Investigation Agency (NIA) has filed chargesheets against 31 accused in connection with four cases arising from incidents that allegedly disrupted the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls in Malda district of West Bengal. The chargesheets have been submitted before the NIA Special Court in Kolkata after the agency completed investigations into a series of events linked to the electoral revision process conducted ahead of the state assembly elections. According to the agency, the cases relate to incidents in which judicial officers and officials engaged in the revision exercise allegedly faced obstruction while carrying out statutory duties. The accused are alleged to have participated in activities that disrupted public movement, interfered with official work and hindered the functioning of personnel assigned to the electoral exercise at different locations in the district.
The NIA stated that the chargesheets were prepared on the basis of extensive evidence gathered during the course of the investigation. This included examination of digital records, technical material, documentary evidence and statements recorded from multiple witnesses connected with the incidents. The agency said the evidence collected enabled investigators to identify the roles allegedly played by each accused in the four cases.
Investigators have alleged that the incidents involved organised attempts to impede the conduct of a legally mandated electoral process. The agency's findings indicate that public roads were blocked and the movement of government officials was obstructed during the execution of duties associated with the revision programme. Judicial officers deployed for the exercise were also allegedly prevented from carrying out their responsibilities at certain locations.
The accused have been booked under relevant provisions of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), the National Highways Act, 1956, and the West Bengal Maintenance of Public Order Act, 1972. The offences cited in the chargesheets relate to unlawful assemblies, obstruction of public infrastructure, interference with public servants and activities affecting maintenance of public order.
The NIA took over the investigation following judicial directions and subsequently examined multiple incidents linked to the electoral revision exercise in Malda. The agency's probe sought to establish whether the disruptions were isolated events or part of a wider pattern of coordinated action aimed at interfering with official processes.
While filing the chargesheets marks a major procedural milestone in the cases, the investigation has not concluded. The NIA has stated that efforts are continuing to identify, trace and prosecute other individuals suspected of involvement in the incidents. The agency added that further action may follow as additional evidence is examined and pending leads are pursued.
The cases are now expected to proceed through judicial scrutiny before the designated NIA court, where the charges and evidence presented by the agency will be examined in accordance with due legal process.
