NHPC has commenced construction activities for the 240 MW Uri-I Stage-II Hydroelectric Project in Uri, Baramulla district, Jammu & Kashmir. The project, approved at an investment of INR 2,708.95 crore, is being developed on the Jhelum River as an extension of the existing Uri-I scheme. Work began with the first blast for the head race tunnel in the past week. Designed as a run-of-the-river project, it will comprise two 120 MW units and is expected to generate around 932 million units of electricity annually upon completion.
NHPC has commenced key construction activities for the 240 MW Uri-I Stage-II Hydroelectric Project in Jammu & Kashmir, with the first blast for underground works carried out in the past week at the project site in Uri, Baramulla district. The project is being developed on the Jhelum River as an extension of the existing Uri-I Hydroelectric Project and is intended to augment power generation capacity in the Union Territory.
The start of construction follows a series of approvals secured over recent months. Earlier, NHPC’s board approved an investment proposal of INR 2,708.95 crore for the implementation of the Uri-I Stage-II project. The approved cost includes INR 264.31 crore towards interest during construction and INR 26.20 crore allocated for enabling infrastructure. The company had subsequently signed an implementation agreement with the Jammu & Kashmir State Power Development Corporation Limited (JKSPDCL) for the project’s development.
The formal commencement of works was marked by NHPC Chairman and Managing Director Bhupender Gupta, who carried out the inaugural blast for the head race tunnel through Adit-3 and Adit-3A. Senior NHPC officials, representatives of the district administration, police authorities and local residents were present during the event. According to the company, the blast signalled the beginning of major underground excavation activities required for the hydropower scheme.
The Uri-I Stage-II project will have an installed capacity of 240 MW, comprising two generating units of 120 MW each. The underground powerhouse is expected to generate approximately 932 million units of electricity annually upon completion. The project is designed as a run-of-the-river scheme and forms part of efforts to harness the hydropower potential of Jammu & Kashmir.
The development is one of several hydropower projects currently being advanced in the Union Territory. Alongside Uri-I Stage-II, NHPC has also secured approval for the 260 MW Dulhasti Stage-II Hydroelectric Project, with the two schemes representing a combined investment of about INR 5,702.91 crore. Both projects are being pursued as part of the company’s strategy to expand hydroelectric generation capacity in Jammu & Kashmir.
NHPC already operates multiple hydropower assets in Jammu & Kashmir and has continued to expand its project pipeline across the region. Officials associated with the Uri-I Stage-II development indicated that the project would strengthen the region’s electricity generation infrastructure and contribute additional renewable energy capacity to the national grid once commissioned.
