• The Centre's PM Surya Ghar: Muft Bijli Yojana has achieved rooftop solar installations across 40 lakh households nationwide.
• Union Minister for New and Renewable Energy Pralhad Joshi announced the milestone on May 29.
• The scheme aims to solarise one crore households by March 2027 through subsidised rooftop solar systems.
• The initiative is intended to help households lower electricity expenditure, access government subsidies and reduce dependence on conventional power sources.
• Launched in February 2024, the programme seeks to expand distributed renewable energy generation by enabling consumers to produce electricity at the household level.
The Centre's PM Surya Ghar: Muft Bijli Yojana has crossed a significant milestone, with rooftop solar systems now installed in 40 lakh households across the country. The achievement was announced on May 29 by Union Minister for New and Renewable Energy Pralhad Joshi, who said the programme continues to expand household participation in renewable energy generation while supporting the government's clean energy objectives.
In a post on social media platform X, Joshi stated that the scheme had enabled 40 lakh households to adopt rooftop solar systems under the PM Surya Ghar: Muft Bijli Yojana. He credited the progress to the government's efforts to accelerate the adoption of decentralised solar energy and broaden access to renewable power across residential segments.
According to the minister, the programme is helping transform citizens from conventional electricity consumers into electricity producers through rooftop solar installations. He indicated that the initiative is creating opportunities for households to generate their own power while reducing reliance on grid-supplied electricity.
The minister further noted that participating households are benefiting from government subsidies available under the scheme. He said the programme is helping families lower their electricity expenses and move towards substantially reduced, and in some cases zero, electricity bills depending on consumption patterns and solar generation capacity.
The PM Surya Ghar: Muft Bijli Yojana was launched in February 2024 as part of the Centre's broader renewable energy and energy transition agenda. The scheme focuses on promoting rooftop solar adoption in the residential sector through financial assistance and streamlined implementation mechanisms.
Under its current targets, the programme aims to install rooftop solar systems in one crore households by March 2027. The latest milestone indicates continued progress towards that objective, with 40 lakh households already covered within a little over two years of the scheme's launch.
The initiative forms part of India's wider strategy to increase renewable energy capacity, encourage distributed power generation and reduce dependence on conventional energy sources. By expanding rooftop solar deployment at the household level, the government seeks to support cleaner energy consumption while providing long-term savings to residential consumers through self-generated electricity.
