Air India Express is set to commence international operations from Navi Mumbai International Airport (NMIA) with a direct service to Abu Dhabi, marking a significant milestone for the airport's expansion into overseas connectivity. Bookings for the new route are expected to open shortly, ahead of the flight's scheduled launch on July 15. The service will become the first international flight to operate from NMIA since the greenfield airport began domestic operations late last year. The development forms part of the broader expansion of aviation infrastructure in the Mumbai Metropolitan Region and is expected to strengthen connectivity between western India and the United Arab Emirates, one of the country's busiest international travel corridors.
Air India Express will begin international operations from Navi Mumbai International Airport with a direct flight to Abu Dhabi, becoming the first airline to operate an overseas service from the airport. The inaugural flight is scheduled to depart on July 15, with bookings for the route expected to open shortly, according to reports.
The launch marks a major operational milestone for Navi Mumbai International Airport, which commenced services on December 25 last year as part of efforts to augment aviation capacity in the Mumbai Metropolitan Region. While domestic operations have already begun, the Abu Dhabi service will be the airport's first international route, signalling the next phase of its development as a major aviation hub.
According to reports, the inaugural Air India Express flight is scheduled to depart from Navi Mumbai at 2:55 am and operate directly to Abu Dhabi. The route will strengthen connectivity between Maharashtra and the United Arab Emirates, a key market for business travel, tourism and the Indian expatriate population.
The introduction of international services is expected to improve passenger distribution across the Mumbai region's airport network. Navi Mumbai International Airport was developed to complement and ease capacity pressures at Mumbai's existing airport while supporting the region's growing passenger traffic demand.
For Air India Express, the route expands its presence in the Gulf market, which remains one of the airline's most important international segments. Abu Dhabi is a significant destination for both leisure and business travellers and serves a large Indian community residing in the UAE. The airline already operates multiple services connecting Indian cities with destinations across the Gulf region.
The commencement of international flights is also expected to enhance the commercial profile of the Navi Mumbai airport region, which has witnessed substantial infrastructure investment and real estate activity in recent years. Improved international connectivity is often viewed as a key factor supporting business districts, logistics hubs, hospitality developments and residential growth around major airports.
The launch comes amid continued expansion in India's aviation sector, with airlines increasing capacity and adding new domestic and international routes to cater to rising passenger demand. As the country's newest major airport begins overseas operations, industry stakeholders will closely watch passenger response and the pace of further international route additions from Navi Mumbai.
The Abu Dhabi service is expected to serve as the first step in establishing Navi Mumbai International Airport as an international gateway for western India, with additional overseas destinations likely to follow as airport operations continue to scale up.
