A total of 322 beneficiaries in Jamshedpur have received keys to newly constructed homes under the Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana (Urban) as part of the Birsanagar Affordable Housing Project. The handover took place in the past week, with Jharkhand’s Urban Development and Housing Department overseeing the initiative. The project comprises 644 housing units developed across two residential blocks, with the first batch of allottees taking possession of their homes. The scheme is aimed at providing formal housing to economically weaker sections and low-income households in the city. The development forms part of the Centre’s PMAY (Urban) programme, which seeks to expand affordable housing availability through government-supported residential projects across urban India.
A total of 322 beneficiaries were handed over the keys to their new homes at the Birsanagar Affordable Housing Project in Jamshedpur in the past week under the Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana (Urban), marking the latest phase of affordable housing delivery under the central government’s housing programme. The homes were allotted to eligible beneficiaries from economically weaker sections through a government-supported housing initiative developed in Birsanagar, Jamshedpur.
The key distribution programme was inaugurated virtually by Jharkhand Urban Development and Housing Minister Sudivya Kumar. The event marked the formal handover of the first batch of completed units within the residential project, which has been developed under the Affordable Housing in Partnership component of PMAY (Urban).
According to officials, the Birsanagar Affordable Housing Project comprises two residential blocks containing a total of 644 dwelling units. Of these, 322 beneficiaries received symbolic keys to their homes during the ceremony. The remaining units are expected to be allotted in accordance with the project’s beneficiary selection and possession process.
The housing project has been developed to provide secure and formal residential accommodation to eligible urban households that may otherwise have limited access to organised housing. Authorities stated that the initiative supports the broader objective of improving living conditions for economically weaker families while strengthening urban housing infrastructure in Jamshedpur.
The programme was attended by elected representatives and local officials. During the event, BJP MP Bidyut Baran Mahato and Jamshedpur East MLA Purnima Das Sahu participated in a plantation drive within the project premises. They highlighted the importance of maintaining green spaces and environmental sustainability alongside residential development.
Preparations for the handover had been completed in advance, with project authorities confirming that all 644 housing units across Blocks 8 and 23 were ready for occupation. Reports indicated that the first group of 322 beneficiaries had completed the required formalities and deposited the necessary amounts, enabling them to take possession of their homes during the initial handover programme.
The Birsanagar project forms part of the wider PMAY (Urban) framework, under which central and state governments collaborate to expand affordable housing stock in urban areas. Through such projects, authorities aim to improve housing access for lower-income households while advancing the broader objective of providing permanent housing solutions to eligible urban residents. The latest handover in Jamshedpur adds another completed affordable housing development to Jharkhand’s urban housing portfolio under the PMAY (Urban) mission.
