• The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) and the Customs Department have signed an MoU to undertake the restoration and conservation of Mahim Fort.
• The initiative aims to preserve one of Mumbai’s important coastal heritage structures while improving public access and visitor infrastructure.
• Restoration activities will focus on structural conservation, environmental improvement and protection of the fort’s historical character.
• The collaboration reflects a broader push towards safeguarding Mumbai’s neglected heritage assets through coordinated institutional efforts.
The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) and the Customs Department have formalised a partnership to restore and conserve the historic Mahim Fort, marking a significant step towards preserving one of Mumbai’s lesser-known but historically important landmarks. The collaboration has been established through a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) that outlines a coordinated approach to protecting the centuries-old structure and improving its surroundings.
Located along Mumbai’s western coastline, Mahim Fort occupies a strategically significant site overlooking Mahim Bay. The fort is believed to have played an important role in the city’s early coastal defence network and remains a reminder of Mumbai’s layered colonial and maritime history. Despite its historical importance, the structure has faced years of neglect, weather-related deterioration and environmental pressures.
Under the agreement, the BMC will lead restoration and conservation efforts while coordinating with the Customs Department, which oversees the land on which the fort stands. The project is expected to focus on stabilising vulnerable portions of the structure, preserving architectural features and improving the overall condition of the heritage site without compromising its historical integrity.
Officials associated with the project have indicated that the restoration exercise will extend beyond structural repairs. Plans also include improving access routes, enhancing cleanliness, managing vegetation growth and creating a more visitor-friendly environment around the monument. The objective is to ensure that conservation efforts contribute both to heritage preservation and public engagement.
The initiative forms part of a wider effort by civic authorities to revive heritage structures across Mumbai. Several historical sites in the city have faced challenges arising from encroachments, environmental degradation and limited maintenance resources. Urban planners and conservation experts have increasingly emphasised the need for institutional partnerships to ensure the long-term protection of such assets.
Mahim Fort’s location makes it particularly vulnerable to coastal weather conditions, including heavy monsoon exposure and saline winds that accelerate structural wear. Conservation work is therefore expected to involve specialised restoration techniques designed to strengthen the fort while preserving its original character. Heritage experts are likely to be consulted during various stages of the project to ensure adherence to conservation standards.
The restoration is also expected to enhance public awareness of Mumbai’s historical landscape. While landmarks such as the Gateway of India and Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Terminus attract significant attention, several smaller heritage sites remain relatively overlooked despite their historical relevance. Authorities believe that revitalising Mahim Fort can help bring greater visibility to the city’s broader heritage network.
The MoU reflects a growing recognition that preserving historical structures requires cooperation between multiple government agencies. By combining administrative support, technical expertise and conservation planning, the BMC and Customs Department aim to secure the future of Mahim Fort while reinforcing Mumbai’s commitment to protecting its cultural and historical legacy.
