The Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA) has approved a new cable-stayed bridge connecting Kopri in Thane East with the Patni Road-Airoli Knowledge Park corridor in Navi Mumbai. The INR 723.42 crore project is expected to provide an alternative route across Thane Creek and reduce congestion at the heavily burdened Kopri junction. The proposed 1.4-km bridge forms part of MMRDA’s wider strategy to strengthen regional connectivity, address missing transport links and support growing commuter and commercial traffic between Thane and Navi Mumbai.
The Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA) has approved the construction of a new cable-stayed bridge connecting Thane and Navi Mumbai, a project aimed at improving cross-creek connectivity and easing traffic congestion at one of the region’s busiest transport nodes.
The proposed bridge, estimated to cost INR 723.42 crore, will span approximately 1.4 km and connect Kopri in Thane East with the Patni Road-Airoli Knowledge Park corridor in Navi Mumbai. The project is expected to create an additional transport link across Thane Creek, improving travel between the two rapidly growing urban centres.
The bridge has been planned as a cable-stayed structure, a design that allows for longer spans while minimising the number of supports within the water body. Authorities expect the project to significantly reduce pressure on existing roads that currently handle large volumes of daily commuter and commercial traffic.
Kopri has emerged as a major traffic bottleneck due to its strategic location near the Eastern Express Highway, Thane railway station and key arterial routes leading towards Navi Mumbai. Rapid urbanisation and increasing vehicle movement between residential hubs in Thane and employment centres in Navi Mumbai have further intensified congestion in the area.
The new crossing is expected to improve access to important commercial districts, including the Airoli Knowledge Park and surrounding business zones. It will also provide a more direct route for commuters travelling between Thane East and Navi Mumbai, potentially reducing travel times and improving network efficiency.
The project forms part of a broader infrastructure programme being undertaken across the Mumbai Metropolitan Region to strengthen connectivity and address transport gaps. Regional planning authorities have identified the need for additional creek crossings as development continues to expand across Thane, Navi Mumbai and neighbouring growth corridors.
Officials believe the bridge will not only improve mobility but also enhance the resilience of the region’s transport network by creating alternative travel routes and reducing dependence on existing crossings. Improved connectivity is expected to support economic activity, facilitate movement of goods and services and enhance access between residential, commercial and industrial centres.
Once completed, the bridge is expected to become a key component of the metropolitan region’s transport infrastructure, supporting future growth while addressing longstanding congestion challenges in the Thane-Navi Mumbai corridor.
