Maharashtra plans rail freight corridor to link ports with Samruddhi Expressway

Synopsis

Maharashtra has proposed the development of a dedicated rail freight corridor aimed at strengthening cargo movement between major ports and inland logistics hubs. The corridor is planned to connect key ports such as Jawaharlal Nehru Port Trust (JNPT) and the upcoming Vadhvan Port with the Samruddhi Expressway network. The project is expected to improve freight efficiency, reduce logistics costs, and enhance export competitiveness across the state. It is also aligned with a broader multimodal infrastructure strategy that integrates rail, road, and port connectivity for smoother trade flow and industrial expansion.

Maharashtra has put forward a proposal to develop a dedicated rail freight corridor designed to improve connectivity between major ports and the state’s key industrial and logistics zones linked to the Samruddhi Expressway.
The plan focuses on creating a direct freight movement system between Jawaharlal Nehru Port Trust (JNPT) and the upcoming Vadhvan Port with the Samruddhi Expressway corridor, which already connects Mumbai to Nagpur. The objective is to build a stronger logistics network that supports faster cargo movement between coastal ports and inland markets.
The proposed corridor is expected to reduce dependency on road-based freight transport by shifting a larger share of goods movement to rail. This is likely to bring down transportation time and logistics costs while improving efficiency for exporters and manufacturers operating across Maharashtra.
The Samruddhi Expressway has already been positioned as a major economic corridor in the state, and the proposed rail freight line is expected to complement it by linking industrial clusters, dry ports, and distribution centres more effectively. This integration is aimed at improving the overall supply chain structure across the region.
The upcoming Vadhvan Port in Palghar district is also expected to play a key role in this network once operational, as it is planned to handle large cargo volumes. Its connection with the freight corridor is seen as an important step in preparing for future trade expansion and handling increased container traffic.
The proposal reflects a wider infrastructure approach focused on multimodal connectivity, where ports, railways, and expressways work in coordination. The aim is to support port-led development, improve export flow, and strengthen Maharashtra’s position as a major logistics hub in the country.
