• Around 60 km of key road stretches are being taken up for detailed project reports to improve connectivity and safety.

• The project aims to reduce travel bottlenecks and improve pilgrim movement during the annual Yatra.

Jammu and Kashmir has planned a major road infrastructure upgrade worth around INR 3,500 crore to strengthen connectivity along the Amarnath Yatra route. The proposal includes detailed project reports being prepared for nearly 60 km of key road stretches that form a critical part of the pilgrimage path.
Officials said the focus of the project is to improve road safety, reduce congestion, and ensure smoother movement of pilgrims during the annual Yatra. The Amarnath route, which passes through difficult mountainous terrain, often faces weather-related disruptions and heavy seasonal traffic, making continuous upgrades necessary.
The initiative is part of a broader infrastructure development plan across the Union Territory, which includes expressways, tunnel projects, ring roads, and ropeway systems. These projects are aimed at improving overall connectivity in remote and high-altitude regions.
The road upgrade plan is currently in the preparation stage, with detailed project reports being finalised before approvals are granted. Once cleared, the development is expected to be implemented in phases to ensure structured execution and minimal disruption.
Authorities have also highlighted that the project is linked to long-term connectivity goals, including better access to tourism and remote border regions. The overall focus remains on strengthening year-round mobility while supporting seasonal pilgrimage demand.
