Synopsis

The Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD) has intensified enforcement action against unauthorised constructions across the capital, demolishing 217 properties and sealing 237 establishments since the beginning of June. The crackdown follows the fatal Malviya Nagar hotel fire that triggered heightened scrutiny of building safety, land-use violations and unauthorised development. During the same period, authorities issued 330 show-cause notices for illegal construction, 151 sealing notices and 91 demolition orders. Parallel inspections conducted by the Revenue Department covered 773 properties across Delhi between June 5 and June 15. The drive spans residential, commercial and mixed-use properties, with authorities examining compliance with building regulations, fire safety requirements and land-use norms. Officials have indicated that enforcement measures will continue across all districts as part of a wider effort to curb unauthorised construction and improve public safety.

The Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD) has demolished 217 unauthorised properties and sealed 237 establishments across the capital since the first week of June as part of a citywide enforcement campaign launched following the Malviya Nagar hotel fire incident. The action, carried out over the past fortnight, forms part of a broader effort to address illegal construction, building safety violations and unauthorised land use across Delhi.
According to official records, the civic body has simultaneously undertaken extensive regulatory action against properties found violating building norms. Since the start of the drive, MCD has issued 330 show-cause notices related to unauthorised construction, 151 sealing show-cause notices and passed 91 demolition orders. Authorities stated that the campaign is being conducted across all municipal zones and covers residential buildings, commercial establishments, guest houses, banquet facilities and ongoing construction projects.
The latest enforcement figures include action taken on June 15 alone, when demolition operations were carried out against 14 properties and 25 establishments were sealed. During the same day, the corporation issued 10 show-cause notices for unauthorised construction and 31 sealing notices as part of its continuing inspection and compliance exercise.
Alongside MCD’s operations, the Revenue Department has undertaken district-level inspections across the city to identify violations relating to building regulations, fire safety standards and land-use norms. Between June 5 and June 15, officials inspected 773 sites across Delhi, including 29 inspections conducted on June 15. These inspections resulted in multiple notices being issued across districts, while several cases were referred to relevant municipal zones for further enforcement action.
Inspection teams examined a range of properties suspected of violations, including residential buildings being used for commercial activities, guest houses operating without approvals and structures lacking mandatory fire safety clearances. Officials reported instances of illegal construction, blocked emergency exits, missing fire no-objection certificates and unauthorised commercial operations in residential premises. West Delhi recorded the highest number of inspections during the review period, followed by South Delhi, North Delhi, South-West Delhi and North-East Delhi.
Authorities stated that the enforcement drive was initiated following a series of incidents that raised concerns over civic safety, unauthorised development and compliance failures. The campaign is being carried out under provisions of the Master Plan for Delhi-2021, the Unified Building By-Laws, 2016, and the Delhi Municipal Corporation Act, 1957. Officials have indicated that demolition, sealing and inspection activities will continue across the city as part of efforts to ensure adherence to approved building plans and safety regulations.
