Navitas Solar has announced plans to invest around INR 1,500 crore to expand its solar manufacturing operations in Gujarat through an integrated project that will include a 3.6 GW solar cell manufacturing facility and a pilot wafer and ingot production line. The project will be implemented in phases, with the first phase scheduled for commissioning in 2027. Civil construction covering more than 10 lakh sq ft is already underway. The expansion is intended to strengthen the company’s manufacturing capabilities across the solar value chain and support greater backward integration. The project is also expected to create nearly 1,000 jobs. Navitas Solar currently operates an annual solar module manufacturing capacity of 3 GW and is seeking to broaden its presence in India’s renewable energy manufacturing ecosystem.
Navitas Solar has unveiled plans to invest approximately INR 1,500 crore in an integrated manufacturing expansion project in Gujarat, aimed at increasing its presence across the solar equipment value chain and strengthening domestic renewable energy manufacturing capabilities.
The company announced on June 16 that the expansion will include the development of a 3.6 GW high-efficiency solar cell manufacturing facility along with a pilot wafer and ingot production line. The project is designed to enhance the company's manufacturing ecosystem by extending operations beyond module production into upstream components used in solar panel manufacturing.
According to the company, the project will be implemented in multiple phases. The first phase is targeted for commissioning in 2027, while additional capacity expansions will be undertaken subsequently based on market demand, project readiness and prevailing industry conditions.
As part of the development, civil construction activities are already in progress. The company stated that work covering more than 10 lakh sq ft is currently underway, laying the foundation for the proposed manufacturing complex.
The planned solar cell manufacturing facility is being designed as a highly automated production platform capable of supporting next-generation solar technologies. Automation and advanced manufacturing systems are expected to play a central role in improving efficiency, quality control and scalability as the facility moves towards commercial operations.
In addition to cell production, Navitas Solar plans to establish a pilot wafer and ingot manufacturing line in 2027. The initiative forms part of the company’s long-term strategy to achieve deeper backward integration within the solar manufacturing value chain. Wafer and ingot production represents a critical upstream segment in solar module manufacturing and is increasingly being prioritised by domestic manufacturers seeking to reduce dependence on imported components.
Commenting on the expansion, Vineet Mittal, Director – Finance and Strategy at Navitas Solar, stated that the proposed integrated manufacturing project represents a strategic step towards building a future-ready platform spanning modules, solar cells and deeper levels of backward integration.
The company expects the project to generate nearly 1,000 employment opportunities once operational. The anticipated jobs are likely to span manufacturing operations, engineering, technical services, quality assurance, logistics and facility management.
Navitas Solar currently operates an annual solar module manufacturing capacity of 3 GW. The latest investment reflects the broader trend of capacity expansion across India's renewable energy manufacturing sector, supported by growing domestic demand for solar power equipment and policy initiatives aimed at strengthening local production.
The Gujarat project is expected to significantly enhance the company's manufacturing footprint and contribute to the development of an integrated domestic solar supply chain as India continues to expand its renewable energy capacity and reduce dependence on imported solar components.
