The Dharavi Redevelopment Project (DRP) has introduced digital twin technology to support resident verification and eligibility assessments under the Mumbai redevelopment programme. The system creates a virtual model of Dharavi’s built environment, enabling authorities to map structures, verify occupancy records and cross-check resident information more accurately. Officials said the technology is intended to improve transparency, reduce discrepancies and streamline the rehabilitation process. The initiative forms part of ongoing surveys and eligibility verification exercises across Dharavi.
The Dharavi Redevelopment Project (DRP) has introduced digital twin technology to strengthen resident verification and eligibility assessments for rehabilitation under the redevelopment programme in Mumbai. The technology is being deployed as authorities continue large-scale surveys, documentation checks and scrutiny of housing claims across Dharavi, with the objective of improving accuracy and transparency in the verification process.
A digital twin is a virtual representation of a physical environment that enables planners and administrators to view, analyse and manage information relating to structures, land parcels and occupancy patterns. Under the Dharavi project, the technology is being used to create a detailed digital model of the settlement, allowing officials to cross-reference survey data, property records and resident information while assessing eligibility for rehabilitation benefits.
Officials associated with the project indicated that the system is expected to assist in identifying genuine beneficiaries and reducing the possibility of duplicate claims or discrepancies in records. The technology provides a comprehensive digital framework that can be used to verify the location and status of structures and occupants within the redevelopment area. According to the project authorities, the adoption of the platform is aimed at making the verification exercise more systematic and efficient.
The move comes as the redevelopment project continues to process a large volume of eligibility cases. In recent months, authorities have undertaken multiple initiatives to facilitate documentation and verification, including special camps and single-window mechanisms for residents whose housing eligibility status remains unresolved due to incomplete or insufficient records. Officials have stated that thousands of cases continue to require scrutiny before final eligibility determinations can be made.
The Dharavi redevelopment programme involves extensive surveys and documentation exercises covering households and commercial establishments across the area. Project authorities have previously reported that more than one lakh units have been surveyed and that draft eligibility records have been issued for a substantial portion of the surveyed properties. Additional verification measures have also been undertaken to enable residents to submit supporting documents and clarify pending claims.
The adoption of digital twin technology represents a further step in the project's effort to integrate technology-led verification processes into redevelopment planning. The system is expected to support ongoing assessments as authorities continue determining rehabilitation eligibility for residents and businesses within Dharavi. Officials stated that the technology would help improve the reliability of data used in decision-making and assist in managing one of the country’s largest urban redevelopment exercises.
