Synopsis

Indore Metro is likely to commence operations on its expanded 17-km priority corridor on June 21, subject to final state government approval. The extension adds an 11-km stretch between Super Corridor and Radisson Square, nearly tripling the operational network from 6 km. The route will connect major residential, commercial and transport hubs, including Vijay Nagar, ISBT and MR-10. The corridor has received safety clearance from the Commissioner of Metro Rail Safety, paving the way for wider metro connectivity across the city.

The Madhya Pradesh Metro Rail Corporation Limited (MPMRCL) is preparing to launch the second phase of the Indore Metro’s priority corridor, with commercial operations on the extended network likely to commence on June 21. The expansion will increase the city’s operational metro network from the existing 6-km stretch to nearly 17 km, connecting Super Corridor with Radisson Square through several key urban centres.
The proposed launch follows a series of delays and comes after the Commissioner of Metro Rail Safety (CMRS) completed inspections and granted the necessary safety clearance for the extended corridor. The approval covered operational, technical and passenger safety parameters, including station infrastructure, signalling systems, braking mechanisms, emergency preparedness and passenger amenities.
The new operational section adds approximately 11 km to the existing route and will connect major residential and commercial districts across Indore. Stations along the extended corridor include MR-10 Road, ISBT, Chandragupta Square, Hiranagar, Bapat Square, Meghdoot Garden, Vijay Nagar Square and Malviya Nagar Square near Radisson. The alignment is expected to improve connectivity between rapidly developing urban clusters and established commercial centres.
Indore Metro currently operates on a limited 6-km section between Gandhi Nagar and the Super Corridor. While the initial stretch marked the city’s entry into metro rail operations, ridership remained constrained because the route primarily served developing areas. The extension to Vijay Nagar and Radisson Square is expected to provide access to higher-density residential and commercial zones, significantly expanding the system’s reach.
The corridor forms part of the broader Indore Metro Phase-I project, which envisages a 31.32-km network across the city. The project was originally approved at a cost of around INR 7,500.8 crore and includes elevated as well as underground sections. Construction began in 2019, although progress faced challenges in densely populated areas, leading to revisions in timelines and project execution plans.
Ahead of the proposed opening, metro authorities completed high-speed trials at speeds of up to 80 kmph and carried out extensive testing of operational systems. Officials stated that all major technical and safety requirements had been met following the CMRS inspection process.
Once operational, the 17-km priority corridor is expected to serve as the backbone of Indore’s emerging mass transit network while supporting future expansion of the city’s metro infrastructure.
