Synopsis

The Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA) has completed a major construction milestone for Metro Line 2B by successfully launching the first composite steel span across the Central Railway corridor between Kurla and Vidyavihar stations on the CSMT–Panvel route. The 54.25-metre-long structure, weighing 252 metric tonnes, was installed during a two-hour railway block through coordinated planning with Central Railway. The operation involved heavy-duty hydraulic cranes, extensive manpower and strict safety measures, marking another significant step in the progress of one of Mumbai’s important metro infrastructure projects.

The Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA) has successfully completed the launch of the first composite steel span over the Central Railway corridor between Kurla and Vidyavihar stations on the CSMT–Panvel section as part of the Mumbai Metro Line 2B project.
The critical operation was carried out during the past week within a tightly scheduled two-hour railway block. The structure, measuring 54.25 metres in length, consists of four composite steel girders with a combined weight of 252 metric tonnes. The span was successfully positioned over active railway tracks between 1 am and 3 am, following extensive planning and coordination with Central Railway officials.
To execute the launch, project teams deployed two 500-metric-tonne hydraulic cranes in tandem lifting mode, supported by a standby crane to ensure operational safety. The activity was undertaken under strict safety and quality standards and involved a workforce of around 130 personnel, including 30 engineers and technical experts as well as 100 skilled and unskilled workers.
According to MMRDA, all required statutory approvals and railway block permissions were obtained before the operation. The authority stated that the successful completion of the span launch was the result of detailed engineering, precision fabrication, comprehensive quality inspections and coordinated on-site execution.
Metro Line 2B, which will connect DN Nagar, Bandra, Kurla, Mankhurd and Mandale, is one of Mumbai’s key metro corridors aimed at improving east-west connectivity and reducing travel time across the city. The project is expected to strengthen integration with existing rail and metro networks, supporting smoother public transportation in the Mumbai Metropolitan Region.
MMRDA also acknowledged the support and cooperation received from Central Railway and other participating agencies that contributed to the successful completion of the complex operation.
