Synopsis

Indian Railways has approved the installation of Kavach Version 4.0 across 598 route kilometres covering 48 block sections of the Ahmedabad Division of Western Railway in Gujarat, at a sanctioned cost of INR 140 crore. The project, approved under the umbrella programme for Kavach deployment with an LTE-based communication backbone on balance routes, covers the remaining sections of the division not previously brought under the system. With 702 route kilometres already sanctioned earlier, the fresh approval completes Kavach coverage across the entire Ahmedabad Division, furthering Indian Railways' network-wide safety modernisation drive.

Indian Railways has sanctioned the deployment of Kavach Version 4.0 across 598 route kilometres spanning 48 block sections of the Ahmedabad Division of Western Railway in Gujarat, at an approved cost of INR 140 crore, in a move that will bring the division's remaining rail sections under the indigenous automatic train protection system.
The approval has been granted under the umbrella programme for the provision of Kavach with an LTE-based communication backbone on balance routes of Indian Railways — a framework designed to systematically extend the safety technology across sections of the network that have not yet been covered under earlier sanctioned phases.
The Ahmedabad Division had previously received sanction for Kavach deployment across approximately 702 route kilometres. The present approval for the remaining 598 route kilometres effectively completes coverage across the full extent of the division, ensuring that all sections within the Ahmedabad Division of Western Railway will operate under the Kavach system upon completion of the current project.
Kavach is an indigenously developed Automatic Train Protection system designed to address several categories of safety risk in train operations. The system is built to prevent Signal Passing at Danger — a condition in which a train crosses a signal set to danger, one of the most common causes of rail accidents. Beyond SPAD prevention, Kavach is engineered to automatically apply brakes when sensors detect an unsafe situation ahead, manage and control train speeds under critical operating conditions, and significantly reduce the risk of train collisions by enabling real-time communication between locomotives and trackside infrastructure.
Version 4.0 represents the most current iteration of the system and is being deployed across Indian Railways' network as part of the organisation's broader modernisation and safety enhancement agenda. The LTE-based communication backbone specified under the umbrella programme provides a more robust and reliable data link between the on-board systems and wayside equipment compared to earlier communication architectures, improving the system's responsiveness in real-time operations.
Indian Railways has been progressively expanding Kavach across its network, with sanctions covering multiple divisions and zones issued over successive years. The Ahmedabad Division's complete coverage, once the current project is executed, will serve as a significant milestone in the Western Railway zone's safety upgrade programme. The technology's indigenous development also aligns with the broader policy direction of reducing dependence on imported railway safety systems and building domestic capability in critical rail infrastructure.
No specific project completion timeline has been indicated in the sanction order. Implementation will be carried out under the standard procedures applicable to umbrella programme projects on Indian Railways.
