Meghalaya is moving ahead with a major highway development plan involving six national highway projects worth INR 3,214 crore. The programme includes four new highway projects and upgradation of two existing corridors aimed at improving intra-state connectivity and reducing travel time across key routes. The foundation stones for these projects are expected to be laid during the North East India Infrastructure Summit & Exhibition. The initiative is part of wider infrastructure development efforts to strengthen regional mobility, trade movement, and connectivity across Meghalaya and adjoining areas.
Meghalaya is set to implement six national highway projects with a total investment of INR 3,214 crore, marking a significant step in strengthening the state’s road infrastructure network. The plan includes the construction of four new highways along with the upgradation of two existing highway stretches across the region.
The development programme is focused on improving road connectivity within Meghalaya, reducing travel time, and easing transport movement across key districts. It is also expected to support better integration between remote and urban regions, helping improve access to essential services and strengthening economic linkages within the state.
As part of the rollout process, foundation stones for these projects are scheduled to be laid during the North East India Infrastructure Summit & Exhibition. The event will also mark the formal commencement of work on the identified highway corridors, with Union Road Transport and Highways Minister Nitin Gadkari expected to be present at the launch.
The project set includes key infrastructure routes such as the Tura Bypass, Dhubri–Phulbari Bridge–Selsella highway stretch, Pynursla Bypass, and the Selsella–Goeragre road project. Along with these, upgradation works are planned for the Shillong–Dawki road and the Jowai Bypass, both of which serve as important connectivity links in the state’s transport network.
These highway projects are expected to improve regional mobility and support smoother movement of goods and passengers. The upgraded road network is also likely to strengthen trade activity and connectivity with neighbouring regions, contributing to overall infrastructure development in the northeastern region.
